“The kids need their mother,” she tries. “Little Tuck, and Tina, a-and even Timmy.”
“I can give them a mother,” he says with distant resolve. His shoe sends a rock skittering over the edge; it doesn’t hit the ground for a long, long time.
“Please,” Trudy says in a voice no louder than a whisper, “I don’t want to die.”

“First of all, I love you,” Lark said, waving the hand he wasn’t using to brace Sparrow.
“I love you too, Dad,” Normal replied, a chill settling in his chest as the apprehension grew.
“I love you,” Lark reiterated, a faraway look crossing his face as he continued, “even though, you know, it kind of hurts my feelings that you went to hug your aunt first. I mean, like, I should be used to that by now, but I’m the one who raised you.”
“Lark, we shouldn’t do this right now,” his aunt said, letting out a more nervous laugh now. “That’s not- Our issues aren’t Normal’s, like, problem.”
“I’m not making it his problem, Sparrow, I’m just, like- I’m expressing my feelings, you always tell me that I’m too closed off so I’m expressing my feelings.” Normal’s dad shook his head and in the back of his mind, Normal wondered if his dad had been drinking as well. That wouldn’t be like him, he usually got over-anxious about his sister and would stay sober to keep an eye on her. “I just- you know, he doesn’t love me like he loves you, and you know why that’s an issue.”
