“Crystalline…” Sonic murmured, running a hand down the front of his torso without thinking. “Oh, uh… What was his name again? …Mephiles? He had creepy pink eyes. Like, a diseased kinda colour, right? And no mouth!”
“…I was joking before, Sonic. How do you know who he was?” Shadow asked.
“I mean, know is a strong word… I think I just met him a couple of times?”
“How? From the way he talks, I’m quite certain that he does not even exist in our current time.”
Or, Sonic remembers pieces of a timeline that never seems to have happened. It spooked Shadow, it spooks him, so they’re heading back to Soleanna, to the heart of it all.

None of these people look at him the way those scientists did. He always dreamed of being liked and accepted, or even ignored. Anything except that fear in their eyes. Now that those idle fantasies are coming true, he doesn’t know how to deal with it. He’s constantly on edge, waiting for a break in the illusion, for someone to glare or flinch away. (He waits for Tails to turn his back, for Knuckles to bare his teeth, for Sonic to never look at him again.)
Are the people of Green Hills just uniquely accepting? Or was G.U.N. uniquely cruel? He's not sure if he wants to know the answer.
