The truth burns in his throat, so painful, Regulus can’t smother it down any longer.

The room goes deathly silent.
“Reggie,” Sirius says carefully, his tone and expression radiating pity. Regulus hates it. “I ran away. I know Mother blasted me from the tapestry, Cissa told me herself, took glee in it too, I could tell -”
“The tapestry isn’t law!” the Slytherin snaps, his cheeks heating under their unwavering attention. “It isn’t law, and Mother, in spite of what she wishes to believe, doesn’t have final say in Black matters. In fact, neither does Father! It’s Grandfather Arcturus who does, or have you forgotten the hierarchy already?”
Rather than continuing their argument, Sirius stares at him for an uncomfortably long time. “Regulus.” There’s an urgency in his voice that has Regulus’s heart quickening. “Reggie, is this the part where you tell me you’re sick?”
Across the room, Remus gasps.
James’s arm tightens around his shoulders. “What?!”
“What?” Regulus echoes, gobsmacked.

“What, exactly, does it mean? That they’re Unforgivable?” Even as preoccupied as he was, Sirius knew the question came out of his mouth well-formed, with a tone of polite and genuine curiosity. He’d had the ability beat into him, quite literally.
“Well,” his professor began, doing a decent job at hiding her disbelief that Sirius was participating in a lecture, “using any one of these curses on a fellow human being is highly illegal and punishable to the fullest extent of wizarding law.”
Sirius couldn’t help it, he let out a strangled sort of laugh. He must have heard her wrong. A tirade of thoughts flashed through his head, yet all he could manage to say was, “what?”
“These are very serious crimes, Mr. Black,” his professor lectured, perhaps mistaking his confusion for something else, “and using any one of them earns the witch or wizard a one-way trip to Azkaban.”
“Well, not everyone,” he replied, before his brain could stop him.

Sirius doesn’t know Unforgivables are unforgivable until Hogwarts.

As Regulus was dying, dragged by Inferi to the bottom of a lake, his only wish was to have had a chance to apologise to his older brother. So, when Regulus finds himself in Sirius’s living room after he saved him, he can barely believe he was given what he wished for – a second chance.
One year later, with Regulus’s meaningful help, Voldemort has been defeated and the war is over. However, the relationship Regulus shares with Sirius could still use some improvement. Therefore, Regulus accepts his older brother’s wild plan of going on a summer road trip throughout England to “strengthen brotherly bonds”.
