Summary
It's 1992, and Mike and Will are juniors in college and living together in a tiny NYC apartment. Life is great. It's everything Mike could ever want: his best friend, an incredible city, and the world at his fingertips. The only problem? He's in love with said best friend and has no idea how he could ever tell him.
Luckily for him, he's presented with an opportunity to get much closer to him every Friday night, as long as he promises not to get all weird after. How hard could that be?

Summary
It’s the start of spring semester, sophomore year at Brown University, and Mike Wheeler has a trio of problems. His parents aren’t happy that he recently declared his study concentration as English Literature rather than something more sensible. His friends are all moving on with their own lives and it feels like everyone is leaving him behind, even Will despite the fact that he’s only five minutes down the road at RISD. And the fantasy manuscript that he’s writing has a romance subplot that just keeps falling flat and storylines that keep brushing a little too close to the reality of Mike’s life. Mike doesn’t want to press too deeply into the character dynamics between the main trio of characters in his novel, despite the fact that his professor keeps urging him to do so, afraid that if he does then he might have to face some truths about his feelings for his best friend that he’s been keeping buried deep in his subconscious.

“We’ll call as much as we can! Bye, we love you!” What–
“Oh! Love you too, Mike.” Joyce responded, shocked. “Love you too, Will!”
Will was openly laughing now. “Love you, Mom, bye,” He waved as the car pulled away from the cabin.
Mike’s cheeks burned red hot. He couldn’t be certain, but he’s pretty sure that he just told his best friend’s mother and the local sheriff he loved them.
Will turned toward Mike, buckling his seatbelt. “I didn’t know you were so close with my parents.”
“Shut up, please,” Mike mumbled.
The crunching gravel evened out to smooth pavement as they pulled back onto the main road. The car whirred slightly as Mike sped up, and Will’s laughter caught in the summer air blowing through the windows.Or
The summer before college, Mike and Will take a road trip. Along the way, they’ll face the grief of losing someone you love, the guilt of continuing to live on without them, and the desire to bridge the great divide together.

“Sorry,” Will says weakly.
“Don’t be,” Mike whispers. “C’mon, Will. You know I’m not like that guy. We’ve been managing this—” He gestures between the two of them, and Will’s eyes fall to his hand—“for, like, half our lives. It’d be really shitty to quit on you now.”
He lets his hand fall between them, palm open. Will’s hand twitches against his comforter.
“You know I’m here,” he breathes. “And you…you know I love you.”
Will’s eyes snap back up to his. His irises are pale in the moonlight, and so bright they look translucent. His lips are parted, and as Mike watches, he runs his tongue between them. He takes in a breath, holds it, and lets it out.
“I know, Mike,” Will says. His voice cracks on Mike’s name.1991. The Castro, San Francisco, California. Mike Wheeler moves into Will Byers's apartment, comes of age, and falls in love.
