In Sunset Savanna, the Cloudcalling Festival celebrates the start of the rainy season. Leona invites you to tag along (after some convincing) and you get to experience the festival with a few other friends chosen to participate in the main event, the Bead Brawl, in hopes that the NRC team wins so the prince can skip out on his royal responsibilities. “Kitten?” you questioned, scrunching your nose up.
Ruggie’s watery blue eyes focused on you. “What, you don’t like it?”
A challenge. Stand your ground or let them claim it - the choice was yours.
“It’s not that I don’t like it, it just came out of nowhere…”
Leona made a sound, halfway between a sigh and a hmph. “Give him a scrap and he’ll scarf down the whole meal, y’know.”
You felt a dull bump against your leg and realised that Leona had stretched one leg out. Ruggie noticed it too and snickered to himself.
Cornered.
They had cornered you. You could stand up and return to your friends, but that would be backing down from them. That didn’t seem like an option.
Bite back.
You nudged Leona’s leg with your own and held it in place. A retaliation that set a spark dancing in his eyes. The thrill of the hunt.

When Dess threw the keys through their window they picked them up and let the sharp edge bite into their fingers. She entered, cocky and proud, already flipping to a pre-written page of her notebook: Want to get out of this fucking town?
“How long?” Their voice croaked.
She shrugged, flipped to the next page, where she’d already written, ‘til I come up with a better idea.
They stood. Slipped their phone into their pocket, picked a random assortment of clothing off their floor, and placed their hand into hers. She fizzed against them. Some sort of excitement. It was a sound they’d never heard from her before.
When she led them out the window they didn’t even think to look back.
