Helly is already sick with guilt as her footsteps echo quietly in the long narrow hall that leads to the Break Room. The fresh revelations about her life outside play over and over and over in her head like those stupid looping videos at the party. Revulsion at her own cruelty and stupidity curdles in Helly’s veins. The machine that reads their remorse will probably pick up on hers the moment she sets foot in the room.
I am sorry for the harm I have caused this world…
The words already spring into her mind. But maybe this one time it’ll be over quickly. Maybe the machine will pick up just how sorry she truly is.
Of course, what she feels right now is a guilt so deep that maybe no words of contrition can ever get it out.
And Mark’s footsteps echoing behind her are a reminder that this time is different.
This time, she really fucked up.
And she has no idea what is going to happen.
