Jaskier chuckles. “Oh, you have to understand that just because some powerful witch tries to kill you isn’t always a good reason to burn all the bridges. I mean, don’t take my example here! Please always burn bridges to powerful witches that try to kill you but-”
“No, that's not what I mean.” Ciri reaches out and wraps her hand around his forearm, startling Jaskier out of his rant. “I mean because you love him.” Jaskier stares at her even as she lets go of his arm. “And he loves her.”

Summary
Geralt has never known the gods or destiny or death to be kind, to show him mercy even if he begged for it. There’s no sense in it when he already knows the answer; bind it in a book or set it to a pretty tune, no story about a witcher will ever be more than a tragedy.
(Before he died scared and alone and half the Continent away from anyone who could save him, Jaskier spent more than twenty years making Geralt out to be the hero of his stories. It’s the least he can do, Geralt thinks, to finally fucking act like one.)

Summary
About fifteen minutes after Jaskier's attempt at crawling through the seemingly perfectly human-sized hole in the wall, he admits to himself that he is well and truly stuck, unable to make progress forward or backward. About ten minutes after that, he resigns himself to the inevitability of humiliation and mockery, and starts shouting for help. It's a keep full of witchers; someone is bound to hear.
Someone does.
Winters at Kaer Morhen are tough in many ways - not least of which is obiding by Geralt's strict no-touching rule when it comes to his goddamn bard. He's a temptation and a half and everyone is just about ready to go insane.
When Jaskier gets himself thoroughly stuck in a compromising situation, the temptation proves too much to resist.

A muscle twitches in the witcher’s jaw. He clears his throat. “We recently… reunited. He and I used to travel together.”
“And the moment I can get out of this storm, we will cease ‘traveling together’ once more,” Jaskier says bitterly. Traveling together. Ha. Geralt makes it sound like they were nothing more than acquaintances on the road.
To him, Jaskier supposes it was. Unfortunately, Jaskier’s own heart and mind never received the memo.
Nivellen raises his brows, glancing between them. “Ah. I’ve… prodded something, haven’t I?”
“There is nothing between us to prod. There never was,” Jaskier insists. “Continue your game. I rather enjoy watching Geralt lose.”

Or, Geralt had never called Jaskier a friend, not once in their twenty years traveling together. Now he returns to uproot Jaskier's life, Child Surprise in tow and mentions of an 'old friend' on his lips. It makes Jaskier want to scream.

Summary
Jaskier doesn’t actually know how much time has passed since the black-cloaked Nilfgaardians grab him after a performance in a shitty tavern in the backcountry of northern Kaedwen. He’d assumed--foolishly, apparently--that he was far enough north that any Nilfgaardian soldiers would be few and far between, likely just scouts or even deserters. It would have been hard to actually get any further north--the little backwater town where he’d been singing was just a day from the mountains. Anymore travel, and he’d find himself skirting the Trail up to Kaer Morhen, the Warlord’s Keep, and, well. He’s brazen, but not that brazen.
(or: a wandering bard bites off more than he can chew with the political ballads, accidentally makes friends with a princess in exile, and finds the Warlord of the North in his debt.)

While that alone wasn’t unusual, the exact expression on the bard’s face was one that usually corresponded with either trouble, or, ever since he and Geralt had involved themselves in an actual relationship, sex.
Judging by their current state of nakedness, Geralt was assuming it was the latter. Well, he hoped it was the latter, at least. He wasn’t very much feeling like getting into trouble with all his bits out in the open.

Summary
It’s Thursday, somewhere between early afternoon and early evening and they're killing the time passing a joint back and forth and just hanging out. Jaskier doesn’t get a lot of time to just hang out in between classes and rehearsals and work and gigs and y’know, sleep, but for the past two years, this is it for his Thursday afternoons. They’re not always in a car, not even always at Ciri’s place, but her dad’s out of town and in a twist of rotten fate she and Jaskier both had been dumped in the past few days. Not the same day, at least. And that calls for being really really high, and so they’re here, taking turns ranting about their recent exes.
“-and you know,” Jaskier says, coming to the conclusion before he says it, “I think I was going to marry her.”
Ciri starts coughing mid-hit, which turns almost immediately into giggles. “You were not!” she says, smacking his thigh and resuming her turn.
He allows it. “Well, I thought about it.” Just a few moments ago, but that’s not the point.

Summary
At the space where “dirt road with a lot of trees” meets “actually the forest”, Jaskier sees the flash, tall and green-gray and terrible. Dandelion barks madly, twisting herself into a frenzy, refusing to cross the threshold. Then Jaskier sees the flash again, and Dandelion freezes, and then calms.
He is not a child, Jaskier reasons, far from it. And Dandelion is relaxed now, leaning back on her haunches and scratching behind her ear with one golden paw. Still, he turns around back towards the house. He will have plenty of time to wander, he reasons, as soon as he finishes his commission. The desk in his make-shift study will do, far more than the unforgiving ground he had planned to sit on.
Dandelion casts her eyes back just once. Jaskier can’t quite bring himself to do the same.

Sometime after he semi-retires, just when he and Jaskier start to get comfortable, Geralt has business to attend. Jaskier stays behind and tries to keep himself busy. And accidentally befriends an old and terrible creature, as one does.
