Sasuke is objectively aware of the fact that coming back to Konoha for Naruto's birthday to surprise him is probably a bad idea. What he doesn't expect is for the idiot to think he's just a hallucination, though.

"You're not really here," Naruto repeats, reaching out. He touches Sasuke's arm, and his eyebrows knit together.
Sasuke lets him, curious to see how far he'll go.
"You're warm," Naruto says, with a hint of surprise in his tone. "Huh. Usually my imagination makes you cold."
Sasuke almost wants to laugh. Almost.
"Not a hallucination," he repeats.
"Yeah, sure."

Summary
They were roommates in college. Best friends, until one drunken night changed everything.

Yaku scoffed. “Just move in if it's such a big deal.”
Lev opened his mouth to retort only to close it a second later. It was as if his thoughts had finally caught up to the reality of what Yaku had just said, overriding his instincts to be annoyingly whiny in a manner of moments.
Then there was silence, loud and encroaching, and Yaku felt something hot and uncomfortable burn within him. An ache perhaps. His own, personalized, chronic heart pain.
And then there was Lev who was staring at Yaku like he was a trick of the light, both real and not real, visible only if you tilted your head the right way.

He holds his chin between two fingers as he thinks. The cat is still, almost unmoving, and it's unnerving, to say the least. Its eyes are sharp, and the gold of its irises is so intense it's almost like…
"The moon," he whispers in awe. "Can I call you that? Tsukki."
The cat's tail swishes. Hesitantly, Yamaguchi holds a hand out, and with bated breath, he waits. The cat eyes his outstretched hand for a bit before it steps closer, bumping its head against his palm, and Yamaguchi internally vibrates with excitement.
yamaguchi is an alchemist who needs a special ingredient for his potion from the solitary mountain witch, who never seems to be home. instead, in its place, is a mysterious cat with black fur and eyes like the moon…

Tadashi's eyes bulged; it was in fact Tsukishima—and Hinata.
The website was so garish that he could barely keep up with everything he saw. Two pictures took up most of the page, with the beginnings of an article tucked beneath them, but the headline really stole Tadashi’s attention:
Ninja Shouyou Spotted at Gay Club; Slumming with D2’s Tsukishima Kei?
Tadashi blinked rapidly until disbelief gave way to a twitch in his cheek. An unbidden snort escaped and suddenly he was giggling uncontrollably. Tsukishima was going to be pissed.
When Tsukishima denies the rumors a little too successfully, the media pivots and Yamaguchi finds himself sharing the spotlight too. Tsukishima's apathy toward the new rumors leaves Yamaguchi with a new perspective on their friendship, and a confusing flutter in his chest.

Summary
Tsukishima's life is a cosmic joke at his expense. Misfortune and strangeness follow no matter where he goes, or what he does, and he's long since given up hope that he can escape it. He's just trying to get by with as little of it as possible.
Yamaguchi has an unremarkable job and a humble apartment which it supports, but he's content with his lot in life, and how the magic which suffuses it cuts him off from doing the things other people take for granted.
