It just wasn't fair. Wasn't fair that she was a hot blooded, adult woman and hadn't had anything but her own fingers for company in two years. Wasn't fair that the thought of dragging a random stranger back to her room turned her stomach. Wasn't fair that she had stumbled into maybe actually being attracted to a broom-headed idiot who sewed carnage as effortlessly as breathing and would let the world cut him to pieces rather than answer with the terrible destruction of which he was capable.

Summary
That had never been part of his plan. Leaving Vash, hair blackened and his body and mind flayed by Knives’ own hands, in the care of strangers—as Millions Knives himself slunk off into the desert sands to die. His body had started to disintegrate before they even touched down on the sands outside the church, shedding pieces of decaying matter and stardust as he staggered towards his brother’s salvation. The energy it had taken to rebuild himself from bones would not last into the night, and Millions Knives did not want Vash to watch as he crumbled in agonizing slow motion.
So, Knives leaves. He slips out the back door while the father and child of Mesa Probe Church tend to an unconscious Vash, on silent, padding feet scattering energy in his wake. An apple tree sprouts from one shallow footprint; against his better judgment, Knives grants the seedling a burst of his own fading power as his cloak slides from his shoulders. It would be put to better use, he thinks, given to something that intended to grow rather than rot.
The child tries to call for Vash when Knives turns his back on the tree.
—And then Millions Knives walks into the dune sea of No Man’s Land, and he does not die.

Millions Knives is making the best of being stuck in a farmhouse-turned-orphanage with a frankly appalling number of human children by getting really into gardening. Everyone is slowly settling in and doing their best. Or something close to their best.

Summary
“Raz wasn’t lyin’ when he said that everyone thought you’d died.” Livio leans against the fifty years out of style wallpaper and watches the storm beat sand against the windows. He doesn’t have to say that by “everyone” what he really means is “Vash”.
“Neither was I—lying that is. I hadn’t exactly planned to be standing here either.” Knives’ piercing gaze follows Livio’s outside. He leans against the counter in a manner closer to fatigue than relaxation. “It won’t matter for much longer, though…”
“You keep sayin’ that like you're certain. I’d have thought that if whatever happened between you and Vash in that last fight was gonna kill ya, it would have already.”
“It did kill me.”

Livio, no longer fanged, and Razlo, no longer a punisher, stumble upon a not so abandoned ranch. There’s a skeleton of a barn out back, a corpse past the south fence, and a not so dead Millions Knives in front of them.
