    The lure moves as Legend turns his head, a small quirk to his lips as he looks at him too. Three dorsal fins are visible from this angle, glowing along the spines, large fan-like tail swishing through the water. The gem-like lights on the end of each spine are– unfairly hypnotising. Closing his eyes on the sight, Warriors sinks to the ground to cautiously meet Legend’s gaze.

    “You are sensitive,” the man says mildly. “Little wonder those Sirens got you– I’m not even trying.”

    It’s been almost 6 years for Wild, three months for Twilight, and everything has changed. There’s a little girl at home waiting for her parents to return. Wild just needs to work out how to tell Twilight that.

    “She turned five two months ago.” Wild whispers, cheek resting on their lover’s hair.
    Fingers dig in deeper, arms tightening to the point it’s a little hard to breathe, as another deeply pained whine sounds. It’s an answer without the question needing to be asked. It also tells him how long Wild’s been gone. How much Twilight’s missed out on. Five years of her life gone, to him, in the space three months. Five years and countless milestones of a little girl he never knew existed.
    Words are a cold replacement for time. It’s the best they can do.
    Wild has waited so long.

    Those days ain’t the easiest to think about, if Twilight has to be honest. Kit’s always been worth it, but it almost broke him. They were both just so lost. After the Calamity was gone, when they could get into a routine and they could live rather than fight to survive, that’s when life finally got easier. It’s also when he could process what he’d lost and then bartered away. He didn’t do it alone, though. He never has. Kit hasn’t ever hesitated to patch him up in return, freely bringing light to his darkest points or just quietly sitting with him when he couldn’t bear to stand. Worth it all, that boy. It’s why he’d argued until he was blue in the face to stay with him, and it’s why he’s not the only one to have been changed. Life got better. Then, of course, the others turned up on their doorstep and their hard-won peace was lost. He’s no Legend, but Twilight deeply dislikes Hylia’s games.

    The first time Wild sets foot in the castle of Warriors’ era, he’s hit by a barrage of memories. Legend decides to do something about it.
    Or: the boys learn new ways to be brave.

    The words are terrifying. The words are true. They say everything that’s ruined beyond repair about him, they tell exactly how to break him and Nayru save him, he’d never wanted this. He’d never wanted to be so weak again, but he is. Wild’s broken him down into something he can't recognise in the mirror, something soft and hopeful and needy and so fucking stupid– he deserves what's coming, he does. He knows better. He’d learned better: at eleven, at twelve, at fourteen and fifteen and eighteen and twenty-one, the lesson has just kept repeating itself, and yet here he is again. His heart is held by someone else who’s fleeting; he’s soft and ruined and stupid and he needs him. It's impossible to deny that he does. Legend needed him even when he didn’t want to, needed him even when he didn't know him to need; Wild’s broken him and he loves him for it.
    He loves him.
    It petrifies him how much.

    “And the Hero?”
    “… no one knows what became of them,” Kass tells him gently, throat tight and heart heavy at the look of quiet, miserable resignation that crosses Link’s face. “There’s little to be found of a time that ceased to be. May Hylia cradle them close, regardless of their fate.”
    They sit quietly for a minute. With a once-fallen hero at his side, the prayer tastes rather like ash. Kass sets his meal aside. He is inordinately grateful to have his friend, yet the knowledge of what befell him makes Kass undeniably bitter that the small Hylian has been thrust onto the battlefield once more. The Call of the Hero cannot be denied. That doesn’t mean it’s fair.

    ’Are you saying there’s another Calamity under the castle?’ He’s very stressed looking under the fake blankness. Wind gets it. He’s just got out of one war and now a scarred older version of him is saying there’s another world-ending event coming. Wind would be heading in the opposite direction if that were him. Instead mini-Wild is standing his ground. It’s impressive. It’s also a bit stupid.

    Three months after the queen died, a young sheikah was ordered to find the hero in hopes of preempting the prophecy.

    “He’s a boy, Impa!” Her eyes bore into her pleadingly, hands up placatingly, and Impa looks away just for her sister to follow. “He’s a little boy who was stolen from his home, he doesn’t belong here. If you could speak to them, make them give him back just until–”
    “He’s exactly where he needs to be.” The words taste bitter in her mouth. “He’s been disguised, no one is aware that he’s anything other than a talented, silent child and those in the know will keep it a secret from everyone. He’s perfectly safe.”

     

    If she says it enough, maybe she’ll believe it herself. Purah’s hysterical little laugh says the lie is more than apparent.
