Edwin ignored him. “And I will act all smitten with you. When they offer you the money to break up with me – and rest assured, throwing money at problems is their only way of handling anything – you will take it. Charles stared at him, unsure of how he could’ve ever thought of Edwin Payne as innocent. “Damn... you are a conniving little bastard, aren’t you?”-
Charles Rowland's first impression of Edwin Payne can be summerized as privileged, rich and aloof – also incredibly pretty, but that’s besides the point. Eddie’s eyebrows are raised. He’s speaking deliberately. “My first grade teacher set up a meeting with Wayne and told him she thought I had autism. So Wayne took me to the doctors and it turned out she was right.”
He is still looking at Steve. Oh. Steve’s been staring at him like an idiot for forty seconds instead of acknowledging this important, incredibly personal detail that he has just shared. Steve remembers eye contact––one, two, three––then answers. “That’s cool.”
“Steve,” Eddie says, carefully. “Have you ever been tested? Because I’ve been noticing… When I look at you, I kinda see some signs.”

Summary
It starts as a joke.
The kids, they’re little shits, who make fun of him on the daily but he loves enough to take them to school and help with their homework. Drives them places when it's raining or cold or they can’t be bothered to bike and packs them lunches when he knows their parents have forgotten. Let’s them sleep in his house when those same parents are out of town, or when Joyce is at work and they can’t all sleep there, and the Wheelers are sick of all the kids spending days and days and days in the basement and like he said it started as a joke.
A comment here and there about him being a babysitter, how far he’s fallen from King Steve to become an unpaid childminder, a joke that isn’t quite a joke after the tenth time. Then when he really falls into the roll, somewhere between the first experience of the upside down and the third, when not knowing when they are, if they’re okay, made his chest tight and his breath shorten until he can get ahold of at least three of them.
Somewhere between there being just four of them to Eleven coming back and Max joining the group they start calling him mom.
