Summary
The first thing Kim did after returning to his dorm was take a long shower. It took five full minutes for sensation to return to the tips of his ears even under the hottest water he could bear without wincing; the rain still hammering down outside is far colder than it has any right to be in Central California’s early April. By the time he’d made it back to the relative shelter of campus, which at least has broad awnings to walk beneath, he was shivering uncontrollably. Even the advertised water-resistant fabric of his gym bag had soaked through, and his clothes—both the ones on his body and the ones in the backpack—were drenched, gone heavy with rainwater.

Summary
Harry, on the pitching mound, gives no indication of noticing the deluge. His curls are stuck to the side of his neck with a mixture of rainwater and sweat, and his shirt clings to him, and his pitching hand is streaked with mud and grit to match the cowhide ball it holds. His pitches, which were mechanical even at the start of practice, have tipped over the edge into sloppiness. It is silent in the dugout and on the field. Everyone is watching and everyone is pretending to look away.

"To answer your earlier question—no, I don’t think we’ll win. I also don’t think it matters that much.”
“How dare you,” Harry says, grinning, and draws himself up for another pitch, which finds its home in Kim’s glove with a satisfying muffled thunk. “How dare you defame the fucking sanctity of intramural community college ball, Kitsuragi. You’ve let the league down. You’ve let the team down. And, most importantly, you’ve let me down.”
“Uh huh," he intones, dry as ever. "Honestly, I’m just surprised that you managed to use the word ‘defame’ correctly in a sentence there."

“So we left him to die, Jean?” Judit asks, every word deliberate.
“Uh,” Trant starts nervously, then doesn’t add anything else. They both ignore him.
“Of course I didn't fucking leave him to die,” Jean snaps like it was supposed to be obvious. “He’s my partner.”

Summary
There are exactly two things in this world that you know yourself to be capable of handling beyond a shadow of a doubt: the Kineema and a crisis. So when you shoulder your way through the doors to the Whirling, head throbbing and vision still blurred full minutes after the blow from the butt of Kortenaer’s rifle, fumbling to keep Harry from slipping out of your arms, you are not panicking. It would, in fact, probably be accurate to say you are the calmest person in this cafeteria. Good. You can trust no stability but your own.

PERCEPTION (SIGHT) [Trivial: Success] - One last thing you’ve missed.
YOU - What is it?
KIM KITSURAGI - Kim sits at the stern, one hand on the engine. Gloved fingers splayed out and relaxed, tensing only when he tilts the motor lightly to steer. His gaze is fixed just past your right knee, on the waves ahead. He’s fixated on navigating the ice floes, steady and collected as ever.
CONCEPTUALIZATION [Medium: Success] - Once all this is over, he will always be the thing you miss.

Summary
In retrospect they could only have met like this: the other hunter throws herself out of the shadows and plunges a dagger between the chimera’s ribs. The blade is silver, and she is careful not to let it touch her own skin, though this cautiousness is lost in the chaos. The other hunter stabs the chimera over and over. The first hunter, gasping for breath beneath loosening talons, hopes the second didn’t see her claws before she put them away.
“Are you okay?” the second asks, hand settling gentle on the first’s arm.
The hunter shivers, nods, and says yes.

Mabel is curled inward toward her, head tucked against Anna’s sternum as if to ensure that her heart will go on beating. Her eyes are closed. She’s not asleep, probably, but her face is relaxed enough that maybe she could be. Anna has no plans either to sleep or to pretend to do so.

Jon rolled his eyes, but Tim thought he could see the smile pulling minutely at the edge of his lips, and he couldn’t help the tiny swell of satisfaction that rose up in him at that.
