The ground below him was plush under his boondocks, sinking into the blanket of wildberries and moss in the place of permafrost. His warm khaki boots were splattered in purple by now, and most of his shoes suffered the same fate. He was born frolicking in the bog, and he would die there too. Like everyone else in this town who’s burial grounds were the same three acres as everyone else. And so he ran. Frank ran through and around and over the gravestones and cenotaphs towards the forest clearing. Caught in an hourglass desperately clawing through sand that was slowly devouring him. Time. Time was suffocating.

“Someone’s feeling sentimental tonight,” Jean teased.
Armin rolled his eyes, steadying himself on his knees. “Says you. You’re literally the sappiest person I’ve ever met.”
If he weren’t so right about that, Jean would have protested. Instead, he just let his eyes skim over Armin’s form in front of him, taking in every little detail. His blond hair was disheveled, endearingly sticking out in all different directions, and his pale skin glistened with sweat, rolling down his chest and pooling at his stomach. The feeling he felt in his gut when he looked at Armin was unlike anything he had ever felt before.
“Yea,” he murmured. “You’re probably right.”

“I’m a little worried,” Jean finally speaks into the yawning silence.
Armin leans forward to stare at Jean’s profile, indulgently. He wants to ask why but it seems like a stupid question.
“About which part?” He settles on.
“All of it,” He breathes through a tired laugh. His smile falters and flutters open, then closed. Armin allows him the time. He would give him the whole two hours it would take to get to Paradis if that’s what he needed.
Jean’s lips twist into a frown, as if he’s bitten something awfully sour, “I’m worried for you, most of all, I think.”
While trying to adjust to life back on a Jeagerist controlled Paradis, four years after the rumbling, Jean and Armin are forced to confront the years that have led them back home.
