“Spar with me, Captain Narumi,” he says. Before Gen can even open his mouth, he’s already blabbing again — that asshole — treating Gen like a well-worn pair of gloves played on the palms of his hands. “Or are you too scared of losing to me in close combat?”
Gen grits his teeth. “Sure, if you want to lose so badly.”
Hoshina’s only answer is an eerie grin, one that only thrills Gen.

"You want to spar at," Narumi detaches his phone from his face to check the time, "nine in the evening? Why don't you train with your beloved Captain Ashiro? Isn't she more suitable to your level?"
Ignoring the jabs toward himself and Ashiro, Hoshina says, "Captain Ashiro is busy with her duties. You, on the other hand, have probably been playing videogames on the floor of your room all day long."
Narumi winces slightly, not liking the fact that Hoshina seems to know him very well. They're a pebble in each other's shoes; Hoshina shouldn't be asking him to spar as if they were on friendly terms.

Summary
Narumi isn’t used to losing. He’s the strongest. He’s been told since enlistment that he is the future of the Defense Force, and he’s taken it in stride that his purpose, his only reason for being born is so that he can save the whole of Japan from the Kaiju invasion. And yet, he couldn’t even protect one person.
“Why are you here, Soushirou? I thought the Third Division was still en route,” Narumi complains instead of acknowledging any of this.
