“Tommy’s here,” she informs him, sitting at their table and leaning forward to rest her head on her crossed arms. She’s not dizzy so much now, but she still gets tired easily.
“He brought food,” Joel responds, holding up a container before he puts it in the fridge.
“He’s still here,” she continues, and Joel just gives her a bemused little smile.
“Is he not meant to be?”
It’s said as a joke, but she barely resists the urge to frown. This is their house now. She doesn’t like the idea of Tommy just…existing inside it, especially when she’s not around.
Too much time for talking and catching up that way.
Too much time for letting Joel remember better days with a better kid.
