The newest Hashira was an oddity and a mystery. Only a few years older than Muichiro, but seemingly so much more a child. Loud and displeasing to the ear, crying and wailing constantly, Giyuu didn’t understand how a coward such as Agatsuma Zenitsu could have ever reached a rank such as theirs, particularly without even so much as a shred of evidence regarding his skill.
It was one of the very few things he and the other Hashira distinctly agreed upon. The boy did not belong. He was unfit to be a slayer, a protector. The boy was a liability, and now, every day he would disappear, up into the mountains of the prefecture they were in, in the middle of winter with Demons supposedly about.

Zenitsu had not spoken ever since the death of his grandfather and was diagnosed with psychogenic mutism. Due to him not being able to speak, he is constantly bullied and ignored by his peers.
Even if he doesn't want to, Zenitsu ends up being student council vice president despite not being able to speak. He couldn't help it! There is something that is attractive about Tanjirou, the student council president, that he can't quite put his finger on.

Zenitsu is not beautiful, it is a fact he has accepted in the recent years of puberty and lovesick glances towards passing women in the street, school, everywhere he went. He's plain. Ordinary. It's not a bad thing, the boy knows. The human he sees in the object is androgynous - his jawline and cheekbones sharper from months of poor eating habits - and elegant, far from his usual appearance of a rushed and disheveled boy from a middle-class family. The wig is quite short, a little longer than his own hair, but it compliments Zenitsu's eye color, bringing it out.
