Whatever he expected marriage to be, and he has precious little to draw from, he supposed that his willpower would solve any problem. He has weathered every deprivation from sleep, food, shelter, safety, to the comfort of simple affection. Many bones broken more than once then stitched back together. But then again, hasn’t she also endured? He takes her wrist. In her he sees, not for the first time, a question and a challenge––what will he do with all his strength? Sophie links their fingers, grasping hard.
“I want us to be free,” she says, “of this terror.”
He looks behind him, the foot of the bed still indented from where he sat, and he wonders how he got from there to here. Sophie takes that chance to slip free, ducking under his arm. She zips her jacket and shoulders her bag. With abiding trust in her eyes, she extends her hand.
“Will you come with me?”
