Sterling is alone in bed when she wakes up, and for thirty horrible seconds she thinks that last night was a dream, that April is still far away in another country, rather than here in Sterling’s apartment.
But then she hears a sound from the kitchen, the quiet patter of feet against hardwood; a domestic sort of noise that Sterling hopes she’ll get to hear for the rest of her life.
Sterling and April have sex in Sterling's kitchen after April returns from the Netherlands. Simple as that.

They still go out for drinks but now they get to head home together, and they get to watch shows beside one another on the couch, and instead of Sterling texting April as soon as work is over to see how her day was, she can ask her in person, can watch the way April’s eyes light up with excitement or anger as she launches into a story about one of her coworkers.

April’s eyebrows shoot to her forehead. Sterling could die. Maybe she will. Maybe the linoleum floor will swallow her up right now. Anything would be preferable to accidentally blurting out that she loves (loves?!) someone who she spent a week making out with over a year ago, and has only been on speaking terms with for the past two weeks.
