keith and shiro welcome james home
“Why are you sorry?” Keith takes James’s chin between his forefinger and thumb, and tilts his face down until their eyes meet, “for trying to be good person? You’re sorry for trying to take care of other people?”
James gives a little halfhearted shrug, and Keith throws the towel over the bedpost before clambering up beside him in bed. It’s quiet in the room, but the window beside the bed is open, letting in a cool early-autumn breeze, and the distant chirp of crickets. Keith tugs James down to lay beside him, their foreheads pressed together and noses brushing while Keith’s hand moves through his hair.
“When was the last time you let someone else take care of you, James?” Keith trails a hand down, down, down until it’s resting low on James’s stomach.
“its been a while.”

It all started in the same way any good love story does.
With the complete stopping of time and a sweet sounds of a 90s pop song.
At least, that’s what Keith had convinced himself.
In reality it had all started freshman year with one (1) T. Shirogane walking into their shared dorm room with a box of vintage video games and a blinding smile. The Roommate, as he and his best friend Pidge had taken to calling him before the fated meeting, had surprised them with his biceps that could crush watermelons and his sensibilities better suited for a quantified nerd.
Hi, I’m Shiro, he’d said simply after carefully placing the box on the desk Keith hadn’t claimed with his own array of actual junk. Then he’d offered his hand, and took Keith’s— and also his heart— in the palm of his warm, strong handshake.
Three years had passed since and not much had actually changed.
Shiro still loved his old video games and consoles.
Pidge still referred to him as The Roommate— though The rang with a different kind of significance now.
And Keith?
Keith was still completely, and irrevocably in love with him.

"I mean, you could always just say you're already married. Take the masses off your necks while we bang out this contract," Pidge offers, ever the voice of reason, as she sits and examines her nails.
Lance emerges from his dying giggles to heave a huge, breathless sigh. "There's just one -ha- problem there, Pidgeon. Who exactly would they be married to? Each other?"
The suggestion is a joke, laden with sarcasm and yet-
Hunk and Pidge exchange a glance.

"You guys aren't stupid," Shiro frowned. "Keith is the top of the class, and you're a close second, right?""Wanna know what else Keith wants to be on top of?" Lance started, and Keith drove his heel into Lance's foot. He kept the pressure there as Shiro looked at them with a confused expression.
"All his other classes," Lance wheezed, and Keith lifted his foot off. "Which is why I was just as surprised as everyone else when he was caught cheating."
"I didn't cheat!" Keith grumbled and Lance stuck out his tongue. "You were caught too!"
