Summary
“Hey.”
Samira’s shoulders drop at the familiar voice, and despite the fatigue tugging her down and the horror of whatever the fuck is in her hair, a smile creeps onto her face. She turns to look at Jack, walking from the door over to her with his arms crossed over his chest.
The company is the only good part of a night shift, in her opinion.

Summary
"Everyone goes into the pot, you know that."
Jack did know that, in theory. "I thought you were keeping me out of it. As a kindness."
Robby snorted. "A kindness."
"Because I'm such a," he took a second to think of the word, "contributor. Annually."
Robby stopped writing — mid-name, it seemed, Cassie barely legible on the scrap in front of him — and cocked his head. "Is that what you're calling it?"
(5 times Jack bid on his coworkers at the charity gala, and 1 time the tables were turned.)

Summary
It had taken the nurses all of ten minutes to start gossiping about who they should set the locum attending up with. Jack hadn't been a practicing bisexual since the Clinton Administration but he couldn’t blame them.
Dr. Suresh Adithan was undeniably good-looking. Tousled onyx waves and a clean beard cropped short, wide kind eyes, rich dark skin, tall—over six feet at least—and a blinding smile all coalesced into a man who was almost certainly used to being noticed by women and probably men alike. Unfortunately for him, Samira Mohan rarely took notice of people not in her care.

Summary
Samira is a doctor. She knows what the expected, healthy response sounds like. A perfectly composed patient sets off all sorts of alarm bells, but no one blinks at a frazzled yet self-aware young woman.
“Yes, I am feeling a bit shaken, but ultimately okay.” Samira has been reading a lot about vagus nerve regulation lately.
Samira Mohan is a creature of habit. Samira Mohan is fine.

Summary
Samira hadn't entirely understood the juxtaposition of the glint in Dana's eye and the sadness in her tone when she'd informed Samira that Jack Abbot was on the roof.
"Getting some air," Dana had put it, like she was in on a sad joke Samira wasn't privy to.
So Samira climbed the stairs all the way to the top, pushing the door until it gave way to dark skies and warm August air, present even at the late–or perhaps early–hour. Her eyes found Abbot, standing past the guardrail a few yards away, on the ledge.

Summary
The clock in the middle of the screen reads 4:17 a.m., so he’s been deeply asleep for a good three and a half hours, which was creeping toward the max he gets at once with his intermittent insomnia. Behind it is Robby’s contact card with the slider at the bottom of the screen welcoming him to accept the call he’s been waiting on for a good two months.
Jack drags his thumb from left to right, picking up the call, “You good, brother?” He rasps quietly, his voice thick with sleep.
There’s a pause, and then a wet gasp echoes over the line, “Fuck, sorry, did I wake you?”
—
Because I saw a screen-grab of Abbot from the Season 2 trailer with the caption: “face of a man who knows he’s gonna get called at 2am cause Robby can’t handle that much time to self-reflect” and couldn't help but run with itBookmarked by lespommes

“Samira,” Trinity steps forward, leans over Samira’s computer monitor. “You eloped with Doctor Abbot and no one knew you knew you had feelings for him-”
“Why do people keep saying that?”

Or: Samira had a plan to reveal to the ED that she and Jack eloped this week, but Brian Donnelley from HR had to go and screw it all up.Bookmarked by lespommes

Summary
Jack Abbot had spent his life in war zones. He had held people together with nothing but a prayer and brought them back from the brink while being shot at. He routinely did very complex surgical procedures in a non-stop emergency department on the night shift on just a couple hours of sleep. And he was absolutely sure that Baby Family Storytime at the Squirrel Hill library branch was the most stressful thing he'd experienced in a very long time.

"You know what your problem is?" He steps closer, close enough that she has to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. "You're so afraid of feeling something that you'd rather feel nothing at all. You'd rather be miserable and 'serene' than happy and—"
"Than what? What's the alternative? Let myself care about you and then watch it destroy everything I've built?"
"Who says it has to destroy anything?"
"History. Experience. Every Jedi who's ever fallen because they couldn't control their attachments."
"Or maybe they fell because their Order made them so afraid of attachment that they never learned how to handle it. Maybe if someone had just let them feel—"

Summary
The first thing that Samira says to Abbot when she first sees him at the conference meet-and-greet drinks is, unfortunately, “Please be my boyfriend.”
To his credit, Abbot’s expression barely changes. He just watches her, like he’s waiting for the rest of it to make sense, which, fair.
“Please pretend to be my boyfriend,” Samira amends, very aware that she sounds like she’s about six years old and on a school playground.

Summary
“You look pathetic.” Dana’s voice startles him from his attempt at compartmentalization. She shoves a protein bar into Jack’s hand before following his line of sight to Central 7, where Samira has her head thrown back in a laugh, her gloved hands attending to the laceration on his calf. “You can’t run recon on your crush all day.”
Jack straightens his spine, shifts back on his heels. His residual leg aches in his socket already. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Jealous is not a good look. Jack knows that.
