Summary
“You know,” Doug starts, walking over to meet her in the kitchen. Maddie reaches for his bottle of whiskey before he gets the chance, knowing that’s what he’s expecting of her. He watches as she pours him a glass, fighting her hands not to shake as she does, before he takes the glass from her and presses a kiss to her cheek before taking a sip. “I was having a think on the drive home from the office.”
“Oh?” Genuine concern, laced with a fear that she keeps buried inside, ripples through Maddie as she forces herself to smile at him.
“I think it’s time your brother starts earning his keep. Properly, this time.”
At his words, Maddie is sure she hears a ringing in her ears. There’s no way that’s what he said. There’s no way he mentioned Buck.
Or: Maddie sends Buck away in an attempt to keep him safe. This follows her life from there, leading up to her arrival at the 118.

Summary
Maddie would be lying if she said she wasn’t nervous for today.
She did lie, in fact, to Buck when he asked if she was.
She’s not even entirely sure why she lied about it. He could probably tell by the way she was wringing her fingers together, trying to mentally work out how many hours she would be out of the house before she was back to the safety of their couch. Instead, he humoured her with a slight smirk when she gave him the very diplomatic answer of “I’m not nervous, I’m looking forward to seeing another aspect of the emergency services.”
Or: As part of Maddie's training, she joins the 118 on a ride along.

Summary
It’s a rare kind of quiet in the Han household, the kind that Maddie cherishes. Jee and Nash are both in bed, with Jee nursing the remnants of a cold she picked up at school, and Chimney is over at Hen and Karen’s to help them set up decorations for Mara’s birthday in the morning. So, sitting on the couch with a small glass of wine in hand, Maddie finds herself in a reflective mood.
Or: Maddie reflects on her and Chim's life so far.

Summary
You need to get out here, Buck. It’s not safe.
Maddie’s voice echoes in his mind, her panicked words swirling over and over again.
It’s not safe.
It’s been him and Maddie against the world for as long as he can remember, his whole life really. She raised him, she protected him from their parents for as long as she could, and when she couldn’t anymore, she took him and ran. Even after they ran, she continued to protect him, keeping him sheltered from what she was doing until he had built his own skills and confidence to work alongside her. Even on those jobs…he knew she was always keeping an eye on him, and was the first to step in if she didn’t like something.
Maddie has always been the one person in his corner, the one person who’s looked out for him and kept him safe. So, for her to send her away…he’s confused.
He’s confused, and he’s angry.
Or: Buck makes his way to safety following Maddie's instructions and finds himself at Element.

Summary
“Hey buddy,” Chimney bends down, reaching eye level with the excitable dog. It bounces around him, letting him pat it on the head before bouncing away, like a game. “Where’s your owner?”
Glancing around, he doesn’t find anyone heading in his direction with the dog. It’s not unusual for dogs to be off their leash here, but normally there’s someone at least in the vicinity.
The dog eventually comes to a stop, sitting on Chimney’s feet as he stands again. He laughs, and reaches down to scratch behind the dog’s ears. The dog flicks it’s head up to stare at him, tongue lazily flopping from it’s mouth as it pants.
“What’s your name, huh?”
Or Chimney meets a dog on his morning walk, and it leads him to meeting Maddie

Summary
He left, and when he told Maddie she cried and Buck held her until she stopped shaking. He stayed for a dinner he made, and then well past Jee-Yun's bedtime and Chim had told him, seriously, when he was gathering his things and Maddie had fallen asleep on the couch, to do something that should have been simple. "Call Eddie."
"Sure," Buck said with a half smile and a bubbling in his gut.
He wasn't going to call Eddie. Eddie was busy, and Buck was an adult, and, in the grand scheme of things, his mother dying wasn't anything for anyone to worry about. She was dead, Eddie Diaz could stubbornly restart Buck's heart, but Margaret Buckley was well past the ressusitation point. Eddie was a lot of things (smart, capable, funny, handsome, adorable, so, so, so kind), but he wasn't a necromancer.
Besides, what had sent him back to Texas was much more important than Buck dead mother.

Summary
Buck cautiously peers into the small opening, catching a glimpse of Eddie staring at himself in the mirror, fingers gripping the edge of the porcelain sink as he shakes his head and says, “I can’t believe I’m in love with a Buckley.”
It's a miracle Buck doesn’t pass out on the spot.
He takes a stumbling step back into Eddie’s room, somehow managing to close the door quietly in his haze. Although it’s entirely possible that he just slammed it because he can’t hear anything over the whooshing in his ears.
He doesn’t know how he didn’t see it before.
Eddie is in love with Maddie.

Summary
The conversation moves on. Buck orders another shot and laughs on cue and remains silent. He might as well be invisible. Nobody has asked him a question in forty-five minutes—
“So, what do you do?” The Hot Priest turns to Buck, gentle brown eyes filled with curiosity. The table falls silent.
“Uh–” Buck stammers, disarmed, “I run a store. Or, well–a coffee shop. A cafe.”
“Cool,” he says like he means it, and Buck kind of believes he does.

Summary
The woman laughs, a real laugh. And Chimney finally gets to see her real smile. Sweet lord, it is stunning. It lights her up in a way he wasn't prepared for.
“Oh my god! That is such a line!” She says on a laugh, he can’t help but laugh back. It is so easy to get caught up with her.
“No I swear it’s not!”
She fixes him with an unimpressed look. Chimney can feel the blush painting his cheeks as he continues
“Well ok, it’s a bit of a line. But not one that I’ve ever said before. Just an incredibly cheesy way of saying what I can’t quite put into words. Give a guy a break!”
Her smile softens but the light stays in her eyes this time.
“Does this guy have a name?”
“Chimney”
Or: Maddie comes to LA early, and Buck can't convince her to stay. So months later, Chimney meets a mystery woman in a smoky bar in the middle of nowhere, and the universe finds a way to bring them together anyway.
