Small snippet from a longer AU I'll probably never write. The set up is that at some nebulous point far post RoW, Ravka ends up needing a political marriage to someone Kerch, and Kuwei has basically volunteered, reunited with Wylan and Jesper, there's a whole slow burn I reference but don't have the energy to write out. Anyway this is the inevitable kuwesper confession/get together. Kuwei centric. That guy has Problems and Issues.

AU for exactly what the title is for. Because I saw these prompts so last minute I am still writing and only have like 80% of this AU plotted out. Mostly, though, it's just a comparison of what Jordie might have been like and how he compares/contrasts with Kaz. Chapters are written as parallels to book chapters, so book chapter spoilers for both Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom.

Yoshiki had gone up that path two weeks ago. He didn't come back. The elders said it was the mountain’s will. The forest takes what it wants. Everyone here knew that—like how you don’t whistle after dark, and how you never stray from the road, and how, when you see something out of the corner of your eye, you don’t look.
What came down from the mountain looked like Yoshiki. Walked like him. Talked like him. But it certainly wasn't him.
Or– a mostly canon-compliant rewrite of one of my favorite manga series' of all time. Asking the question, what if Yoshiki had been the one who had died on that mountain?
