“When I was in, like, third grade or something. Nothing serious though. I’ve been single on Valentine’s every year."
“But it is not only for couples?"
“No, it’s not… It's just…You have to have someone in your life that’s special… If you are dating someone they’d be your Valentine sort of automatically… But there’s also people that you’re just talking to, or maybe someone you just like but they don’t know you like them… and Valentine’s Day can sometimes be an opportunity to make it official? Shoot your shot, I guess."
“And you do not have plans for this holiday?” Yelena asks, prodding one of the bright red hearts hanging by a string down from the balcony above.
“Uhhhh,” Kate says, brain having to buffer a moment at the implications of the question.

There are wolves in the night, she said, once, when Yelena asked her for a bedtime story. And there are stories about wolves and girls. Girls in red; all alone in the woods, about to get eaten up. She had grabbed Yelena’s face in both hands, then. Her palms soft and warm even as Yelena remembers being able to feel the calluses there. A twelve-year-old girl with calluses on her palms, a perfect Middle America accent, sharp, intelligent eyes, and muscles that were stronger than most adults—a wolf in disguise.

Kate wakes the next morning to find Yelena curled into her side, their legs tangled together, their hands touching. Yelena blinks slowly at her, smiles. “Good morning,” she says, her voice still heavy with sleep and her accent softly sweet, and there’s that strange flash of familiarity again.
All of a sudden, the realization hits Kate like a sledgehammer: the accent, the blonde hair. The assassin Clint told her about earlier.
