Smoking has a big significance in cinema, Vernon thinks.
Ho Po-wing lighting up his cigarette with the burning tip of Lai Yiu-fai's in the middle of their break-up in Happy Together. Chow Mo-wan and Wang Jing-wen on the rooftop of their apartment building in 2046. They signify sadness, loneliness, the inability to say their feelings and the consequences of heartbreak; The refusal to be happy. A seduction, a secret, but all with underlying melancholy.
He thinks, as he takes his cigarette out of his mouth to press a small kiss on Seungkwan’s temple, that his moments with Seungkwan are different from those.

When it was just him, Heart, the four walls of their room, and a window that let the light in just enough to know some semblance of the outside still existed. It was still there. The world, that is. Li Ming found it nice sometimes, though, to pretend that their bed was a little floating rock somewhere.

In retrospect, Tobio shouldn’t be surprised. Hinata has always stayed on the same page as him, easily attuned and receptive to all his deeper fears and troubles. It makes perfect sense, then, that they would be going through the exact same struggles. The same internal conflict of wanting to fly as high as possible, to soar beyond any and all limits, but the fear of leaving the familiar, comfortable horizon behind. Tobio doesn’t know if he’ll meet anyone else in the world who understands him as well as his best friend does.
