Out of all people… him. Why does—out of all people in Hawkins—it has to be him who hears Mike. Why did he say all that? What if Will thinks he’s pathetic? What if he pities him?
He clutches the walkie, considers turning it on, then stops. “What if he regrets answering? What if I ruin whatever’s left?”
It’s stupid, isn’t it? After all, it’s Will. The same Will he was when they first met on the swings and Mike asked him to be his friend. But people change, don’t they?

Vecna was defeated years ago. The party finished Highschool and was, sadly, growing apart.
It’s 1990 and Will finds his old walkie talkie. It’s 1990 and he turns it on, off, on again. It’s 1990 and he finally get’s his best friend back. After a year with almost no contact.
But what about his— Well, Will thinks, that has to be a problem for his future self.

Mike sighs, looking down at his hands. "I always thought I would end up with someone more similar to me, you know? Someone I can talk about, like, hobbies and music and stuff with, without them visibly losing interest halfway through.”
You have more in common with him than El, says the voice in Will’s head. He wonders, briefly, whether it would be weird to shove his face back into the pillow and scream.
Will is definitely not qualified to be giving out any relationship advice. For one, he's never actually dated anyone before. Second, one of the people in said relationship is his sister. And third, the other person is the guy he's sort of in love with. There's no possible way this could backfire. Right?

After the events of season four, Mike decides he can't do this anymore. He's only an inconvenience, a burden. So even though the world needs saving, he decides he won't be part of that, by putting a bullet in his head.
