Summary
Nahida was born, gasping and crying and covered in the cold ashes of her predecessor, already dead on the altar of her destiny.
This may seem a little gruesome to say, she understands. Let her explain a little.
Destiny is: [the assigned path gifted to those residing on Teyvat by the Heavens]. Destiny is inescapable. From the moment you are born, your fate is your sacred duty, your right, your privilege, and your prison.
Destiny is woven into the whole of Nahida, into the fruits of her branches and the burning, unwanted god-heart that consumes her from inside her newly-formed chest.
Nahida awoke for the first time, shivering and bloody in the barren wasteland where her predecessor and creator had died, and though she knew little, she knew this:
[Nahida’s destiny is to die for her people.]
-
As the Incarnations of Irminsul, Nahida and Rukkhadevata are privy to the inevitable fates hidden in its fruit. They do their best with this knowledge.

Summary
In the beginning, Nahida didn’t understand what she had done, to warrant such punishment. She thought that if they were confined, it must be for a good reason, and they needed to trust the Sages to know what was best. After all - they had each other, didn't they? That was the point of a daemon - to never be alone.
But isolation poisons the mind, and any escape becomes addicting. Nahida turned to the world of dreams, the one place her daemon couldn't follow. In this way, she can't blame Shahrazad for what happened next. She left Shahrazad first.
or:
Nahida, the daemon-that-wasn't, and the hard road to acceptance.

Summary
When she dared to imagine it, she thought her return to society would be a triumph. She’d finally meet her people, and they would see her for who she was and they would know she cared about them and then they would care about her. They’d realize that she’s been right here this whole time, trying to help them as best she could, and then they would love her like all the information tucked away inside her says they used to.
But this isn’t Nahida’s imagination, so instead of going and doing something actually helpful, she’s hiding in a mostly-forgotten storage room deep in the Akademiya.
or:
Nahida's going to figure out this whole physical-world thing, no matter what it takes.

Summary
"I just need you to know," Will says quietly, and he makes himself hold Mike's gaze, "that if something happens - if I hurt you, or anyone else - it's not because I wanted to. I would never want to hurt you, Mike. Never."
The words hang between them, loaded with more meaning than Will intended.
There's a pause where all Will can hear is their breathing echoing against the storage closet's walls. The hum is more distant now, buzzing in the back of Will's mind, but the uneven inhales coming from in front of him sound louder. The breath tickling his nose (because they really are that close) feels realer.
Mike's eyes are still darting across Will's face, and Will can feel him inhale sharply. "Will, why are you so convinced you're going to hurt someone? What did Vecna show you?"
Everything, Will thinks. He showed me everything. Showed me killing you over and over until I couldn't see anything else.
Somewhere between slaying interdimensional eldritch horrors, exploding an entire dimension, and risking their lives countless times, Mike and Will find each other.

Summary
Silence. Hungry, carnivorous—or maybe cavernous, vast and lined with teeth, ready to bite. The quiet before the storm, the gasped breath in before the heart stops. Tragedy tastes bitter. Blood tastes like pennies. Both are in the air, promises coating the tongue. Something bad is about to happen.
From beneath the bed, something reaches out—a mass of darkness, a shapeless nothing—and it grabs Mike by the wrist, yanks him forward. Mike chokes on a yelp and flails his arm free, blood dripping from where the shadows grabbed him, like the touch of darkness has split him open. He tries to scramble away, unfolds his legs to kick himself back but only makes himself easier, more vulnerable. The unidentifiable mass encircles Mike's ankle, and he screams something agonized, terrified—and then it pulls Mike, clawing at the carpet with his bloodied fingers, under the bed.
This time, the silence isn't hungry. It's satisfied.
will starts entering the mindscape in his dreams on the same night that mike gets taken by vecna. this is probably the least confusing part of everything that happens after.

Summary
Now, someone walked into the room. A boy, awkwardly standing at the side of his bed, looking over him worriedly. His hair was brown and scruffy, and he had big baby doe eyes and a yellow-and-blue horizontally-striped shirt like a cartoon character. The window was lighting him up like he was important to Mike’s narrative. The curtains are blue, thought Mike, this boy is light. I love metaphors. Maybe he was high on the pain meds. Upon seeing him, Mike felt a great affection, a great peace. Plus, he had long eyelashes. Mike almost giggled to himself. He was definitely a little high.
“Hi.” breathed Mike.
“Hi.” he said, hesitating.
“We’re friends?” Mike asked hopefully.
Or: During the Party's final battle with Vecna, Mike is gravely injured and loses his memories. He wakes up in a hospital only remembering a handful of inconsequential little things, like how much he loves a boy who seems like light.

Summary
Will’s expression smoothes out then, and he’s looking at Mike in consideration, like he sees him in all the ways Mike does not want to be seen.
“You were jealous,” Will offers it like it’s a fact, simple as that, and Mike nearly doubles over with the shock of it, an immediate blow to whatever unbothered facade he’d been attempting to put on for Will.
“Was not,” but his voice is so weak that he nearly collapses in embarrassment, an omission of guilt clear as day.
Mike is in love with Will. He tries very hard to love him quietly.
