    Neil Josten was dead.

    Andrew hadn’t had the chance—and hadn’t cared enough—to see his body. All he knew was that one moment, that creature had been beside him, saying thank you, and the next, he had vanished forever, the way good things always tended to do sooner or later.

    The Foxes hadn’t handled it well. The media nearly exploded for days, weeks. The game against the Ravens? A disaster. Without Neil—the key that held together all those people with little in common—nothing made sense.
    Andrew should have been used to that feeling by now: the emptiness, the apathy, the silence.
    And yet, life seemed louder than ever, his mind collapsing under thoughts that had never been there before.

    A lifetime passes: long, dragging, leading nowhere.
    And when Andrew finally closes his eyes—he goes back.

    Neil Josten was right in front of him: face twisted, pale, lips parted in search of breath, hands clutching his stomach so tightly it looked like he might squeeze himself apart. Alive. And exactly as he had been the day they met.

During that time, Andrew has been unable to interact with anyone; no one can see him, hear him, or feel him. Until, that is, Neil Josten attends Palmetto as the Foxes' newest recruit and shocks Andrew with the realization that he's not alone anymore.

    “Who even are you?” Neil blinked at him with those perfect, blue eyes.

    Andrew became very aware of Neil’s weight at that moment and dropped him. Neil bounced back on the bed and yelped.

    “I’m the guy who is going to go take a shower and you’re the guy who is going to wait patiently for Kevin to come tend to your needs,” Andrew said. He gestured down to Neil’s blanket covered body. “Whatever this is, is above my pay grade.”
