“I’m not a fucking runaway,” she snaps, squaring her shoulders and drawing her backpack closer. “And I am a resident. Kid of the week for the Jenkins. You know, the people who live in 3E?”
“And the Jenkins have you down here doin’ laundry after school every day?” he asks with incredulity.
She glances around the room, a uniquely teenage disdain in her sneer as she surveys the silent machines. “Obviously.”

Tommy’s never been quiet about where he stands. He thinks that their best bet is to try to find a settlement, to walk in careful and earn a place and pray it isn’t filled with cultists. He knows that he and Joel can get on the way they’ve been living just fine – they’re used to scraping by. But Ellie...the kid needs more. She needs space to grow, to feel safe. She needs a home. Tommy clings to the idea that there are still good people left in this world – he has to believe that, or else what’s the point in continuing on?
But Joel wants no part of what he clearly thinks is Tommy’s delusion. He scoffs, calls him naive. He insists they’ll manage, because they’ve always managed. The idea of trusting strangers, of putting Ellie inside anyone else’s walls, under anyone else’s rules, it rubs Joel raw. He doesn’t say it out loud, but Tommy hears it anyway: no one can protect her like I do. And maybe that’s true. But maybe that’s not the point anymore.

It’s only when he licks her palm and Ellie lets out a disgusted, “Ugh!” that Sally stirs with a whine.
“Sorry, sorry,” Jesse apologizes, pressing several light kisses to her forehead. “Go back to sleep,” he says into her hair. She whines again, and he's forced to up the ante. “When you wake up, I’ll be here and we’ll go get you a puppy, okay?”
She takes a deep, shaky breath and settles back down against him, moving her head so her nose is in his armpit. “Misser Eugene’s puppies…” she mumbles and then she’s out.
When he looks back up, Ellie’s grin takes up her whole face. “You’re such a sucker.”

“Tommy.” Ellie struggles to get into a sitting position, wincing. She’s far too groggy to sit up fully but she can manage okay. “Tommy. What the fuck did you do?”
“I stopped them.”
The feeling in her stomach isn’t just the aching anymore. It’s dread. “How?”
Tommy’s silent for a moment before, finally, looking at her in the rearview mirror.
“You really want me to answer that?” He asks.

She’s sure that there’s some degree of truth to it, but Sarah’s calling bull on Ellie actually wanting to be entirely alone in the freezing, blustery landscape of a Massachusetts winter instead of flying out to Wyoming and spending a few weeks together.
“Sarah…”
“No! No, it’ll be fun, okay? We can do all of my favorite holiday things like bake cookies and watch movies and go shopping. I hate going shopping alone! And my dad already said that you can come, and it’s our first Christmas since he moved up to Wyoming, and it’ll just be…nice if you’re there too.” Everything was already going to be so different, to feel so different. So maybe this difference could be something good. Sarah could stand a chance to look forward to along with all of the change that she was…making the best of. “I want you there too.”

As if the efforts of survival have not been inscribed along her very skin.

They stare at a fire which burns without ceasing—at skeleton fragments and glass shards and a spoon, warped and curled in on itself. There are flames in Ellie’s throat. There is poison in her body. The pages of a Bible have long since burned away—like they were never intended to be permanent. Not like loss. Not like grief. Not like loneliness.
Or: Ellie and Joel don't find each other until after she's already burned Silver Lake, and all of its residents, to the ground.
