Summary
In the aftermath of a messy divorce and amidst great pressure from his publishers, blunt and jaded food critic Vincent Moretti visits The Black Orlov, a so-called ‘family owned,’ hole-in-the-wall restaurant specializing in comfort food. While the restaurant has rave reviews, he is underwhelmed, and writes as such in his review. He doesn’t think much of it—just another overhyped restaurant in the heart of the city—and has more important things to worry about, with his eight-year-old daughter’s recent behavioural issues and his publishers breathing down his neck. However, the co-owner of the restaurant takes his review a lot more personally than he’d expected, and Vincent is suddenly thrust into a side of the culinary world he’d never even known existed.
Leo Caruso is a man who takes responsibility for his actions. Getting his best friend pregnant and dropping out of high school wasn’t in his life plans, but he thinks he’s done pretty well for himself and his family. But after a dead-faced, pretentious food critic gives the restaurant a horrible review, things start going wrong, things that are out of his control. He’s angry, hurt, and dead-set on showing that pompous bastard that he couldn’t possibly be more wrong.

Summary
"C'mon, Leo. You can do better than that. Angels aren't fairies that disintegrate with a pout just because someone says they don't believe."
Leo got 99 problems, but a dead fed claiming to be his guardian angel ain't one.
Until now, that was.

"Goddammit! We're in a Mexican motel, in the middle of nowhere, Leo! A motel that's a joint venture with a nightclub. How the hell did this not scream 'vampire den' to you?"
Without Emily chartering them to Mexico, Leo and Vincent make the tour by car. On their first day across the border, Vincent wakes up to a throbbing headache and a very much not human Leo.

"You do realize that she would have kissed you even without that thing, right?" He said and pointed upwards. "A mistletoe doesn't magically make people want to kiss you."
Set after the waterfall. Their clothes, being soaking wet at the end of one scene and dry at the start of the next, bugged me immensely. So, here's one explanation.

“The sleeping bag. We can share it.”
Leo’s quiet for a second. When Vincent looks over, he’s giving him a funny look that he can’t quite place; somewhere between suspicious and hesitant.“You want to sleep in the same sleeping bag.”
“I don’t want to,” Vincent snaps, exasperated. “But I’m not sleeping on the bare ground, so unless you want to, then we share. Final offer, take it or leave it.”

Summary
In Leo’s fantasies, Vincent is rough.
To be fair, it’s not a huge stretch. He’s seen him hold his own in a fight, has seen him handle a gun like a pro and move fast as hell when he wants to. It isn’t hard to imagine that under his typical cool, calm demeanour, he’s got a fire in him that could burn Leo alive if he pushed hard enough.
And god, does Leo want to push.
+
As they evade the law yet again, Leo finds that it’s getting harder and harder to ignore how much he’s drawn to Vincent. He wants him--but it’s an impossible fantasy, and he isn’t going to let that ruin things between them.
He hopes.

Leo doesn’t answer right away. After a brief silence, he clears his throat.
“I, uh. I kind of have a...a thing. For that.”
“For what, monologues?”
“God--no, you fucking dumbass. For, y’know, doing it in front of people. And I’m not about to make you watch, so…”
Vincent chokes on his spit, effectively cutting Leo off.Leo and Vincent are able to take a brief reprieve, but Vincent finds that rest is hard to come by--for multiple reasons.

DISCONTINUED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
“Excuse me!”
Whoever had called out was walking towards him and Leo turned, bracing for a lecture. When he saw the person in question, however, the thought was quickly wiped from his mind.
The man approaching him looked nothing like the sort of teacher he’d been expecting. He was nearly the same height as Leo, walking with straight posture and sure strides. He had an immaculately-groomed goatee and stern eyes framed by stylish black glasses, and looked to be around Leo’s age; maybe in his early forties.
Leo tried to look aloof as the man walked up to him.
“You’re not supposed to be here.”Leo is a proud father, and a husband in a loving open marriage. Vincent is an elementary school teacher, recently divorced, and has never held his baby daughter. They have very little in common aside from a mutual attraction, yet their lives seem to be becoming more and more intertwined--for better or for worse.
This is a rewrite of my previous unfinished work titled A Way In.
