You look up to find him staring at you like he has you memorized.
Fuck it. He asked.
“He didn’t want to go down on me.”
The air gets sucked out of the room as your statement lingers between you. To his credit, Jack keeps looking right at you. Your face is on fire but you refuse to break eye contact first. You feel absolutely insane, and you think if this goes on for one more second you are leaving and walking to PTMC and jumping off of the roof.
Another muscle twitches in Jack’s jaw and your eyes flick to his knuckles flexing where he holds the mug, the only tells that he’s registered what you’ve said.
When he speaks, it comes out gravelly. “What?”

Samira knows what Abbot looks like when he’s retreating from triage to scrub the blood out of his silver hair or change out of a pair of soiled scrubs, to wipe himself down with waterless shower foam until his skin smells like skin again. She knows Abbot’s face, neutral and plain, mischievous and amused, frustrated and worn thin from exhaustion. The expression he wore, limping towards the stairs, is not familiar to her.

All that to say, it was difficult for him to understand just how Samira Mohan seemed to sneak up on him. How she managed to take root in his life as if she’d been planted there beside him all along.
In hindsight, he could see that finding her red-eyed and flustered had been the beginning of something. He had, unthinkingly, taken the leap from professional to personal. Jack hadn’t seen it that way. His mental file on Samira Mohan was long; nowhere within it had he noted that she was the type to cry at work or leave early.
Jack was worried about her. So what?

Hey Samira, he’s specifically asked me to stop calling you, but I’m more afraid of you than I’m afraid of him, because you’ll be disappointed in me and that’s worse—

She has to say it. She has to say it, because the last time someone was rolled away from her on a gurney it was to the morgue. Brushing the pads of her thumbs over his cheekbones, Samira stoops until their foreheads touch, her lips ghosting over his.
“I love you,” she whispers, eyes wide open.
Jack’s mouth curves into a gentle smile.
“I know.”

At shift change, Jack is stabbed by a patient brought into the Pitt. Samira Mohan can only watch, and wait, and wait.

When he boards the elevator he’s upset. By the time he leaves the elevator he’s angry, each reverberation of his feet hitting asphalt felt in the remaining bones and surgical grade titanium in his right leg, all the way up to his hip. It takes him less than sixty seconds to walk from the parking deck to the ambulance bay. Ten feet from the entrance, he sees Robby walk through the first set of doors, past Ahmad, and then through the second set of doors. His pulse roars in his ears, his heart pounding in his chest. For the first time in years, Jack Abbot feels something approximating rage, an emotion he has long assumed to be medicated out of him.
His hands furl into fists.
