John Lester. Arthur thought about him carrying that name around everywhere he went and grit his teeth like he was chewing sand. It was his own damned fault for telling John to pick whatever he wanted; he’d had plenty of opportunity to lay down ground rules, it wasn’t John’s fault Arthur had run out of other Lesters quite some time ago with no plans to bolster numbers.
Not that he’d been much more enthused to gift his name to Bella. Why couldn’t he seem to stop comparing the scrap of the King in Yellow he’d stolen to his dead wife?
(In which John and Arthur take up private investigating together once they find their way out of the Dreamlands and into separate bodies.)

“Yes,” John said, not quite identifying the emotion lacing the question. “Your hair is a rich brown that borders on copper in the sun, only now it is interspersed with gray, making the brown appear slightly softer in color. The light from the fire gives it a sheen like spun silver and gold.”
Arthur fell quiet again, his fingers still lingering in his hair like he might be able to feel the change in it.
“How much?”
John hummed. “More than half, maybe.”
“Oh.” The word was more a breath, like he hadn’t meant for John to hear it.

Arthur wakes up. So many of his memories lately start with this. He wakes up, and everything hurts, and John is saying something—but John’s not saying anything this time, and there’s someone in this room with Arthur that sounds a lot like his friend.

John’s voice always rose and fell, low into a deep growling bass and high into a rough yell. But one constant, one word that never sounded different no matter the tone was how he said Arthur’s name. Emphasis on the ‘ar’ and ‘ur’, the ‘th’ in the middle always smooth like wind. Other people tended to hiss that sound, the ‘th’. With John, it seemed he knew exactly how to say it to make it glide.Based on all that, he deduced it was in fact John saying, “Arthur!”
