“Stealing’s easy, then,” Jehan says, eyes still on the wind chimes above them. “I couldn’t steal anything.”
Montparnasse huffs. “There’s really no need to drive that home. You’re quite above it all; I’m aware.”
It takes a moment for Jehan to catch up. “Ah,” they say, softly, “no, see, I couldn’t steal anything. I wouldn't know how: they’d catch me immediately.”
“Oh.” Montparnasse eyes them thoughtfully, and says, after a moment and with the barest hint of a smile, “Well, we can change that.”(In which Jehan meets Montparnasse, and Montparnasse meets what he's pretty sure is his end.)

“Good thinking,” murmurs Edwin. “Perhaps it’s a benevolent sort of poltergeist. I wonder if -”
He’s cut off by a shower of daisies, the large, long-stemmed ones they put out in the shops for early spring.
“Aw.” Charles picks one up between thumb and index finger, turning it in his hand. “That’s pretty. D’you know, whatever’s making this happen, I feel like it honestly means well with us.”
Edwin isn’t listening. When Charles looks at him, he’s paler than normal, his jaw set in that not-at-all-good way.
“Please excuse me,” says Edwin, and walks straight into their mirror.(A teacup appears in the office, Edwin blushes a significant number of times, and Charles copes normally with being visibly showered in affection.)

Crystal wipes the back of her hand across her cheek. “Wow, you really are relieved, huh,” she sniffs. “All I did was hold a pendulum, Edwin, come on.”
“One which confirmed that our friend is still with us,” says Edwin, having schooled his expression into something calm once again. “You’ve put her back on the map, quite literally.”
“Yeah, about that,” says Charles. He’s swept the map gently clean with his hands, brushing flakes of soot and dust off the paper to reveal the exact point of the pendulum. “What the bloody hell is Niko doing in the Panama Canal?”(Crystal has dreams. Charles worries about Edwin. Edwin worries about Niko. Niko swims halfway around the world. Everyone becomes a little braver.)

“Give me your hand.” Gerard has traced the lines from the paper again on his own skin, down the back of his right hand, which he is extending, palm down, across the desk. “Christ, not that one.”
His injured hand halfway to the desk, Jon stops. “I thought – won't it work better if it's the one she–?” It's an odd presumption. He knows nothing about thaumaturgy.
“I'm sure it would. Didn't become excellent at this to have people make it easy for me, though.” Gerard moves his fingers, and there are eyes on his knuckles; there are eyes on his wrists. “Come on. I don't bite.”(In which Gerry has a ghost problem and a talent for curse-breaking, and Jon and Martin have something of a knack for getting cursed.)

“Well, I've never run a museum, but refusing to socialise with anyone who works there doesn't seem like the only way forward,” says Georgie. The Admiral places an inquisitive paw on her chin. “Just my two cents.”
And what could he say to that? Jon would have happily continued along his established track of failed curmudgeonly authority if the cat-situation hadn't come along to bond him and his co-workers in hushing up some gross museological malpractice.
(Oh, Jon knows it's just Martin. He wouldn't have thought twice about inviting Tim or Sasha over, and he knows exactly why. Not addressing that 'why' is a deliberate choice: whatever he feels for Martin needs a sturdy dam, or he'll find himself lost in the flood before long.)

"Hey." Ed reaches across because it's the only thing that feels right. He grasps Stede's wrist and smoothes the pad of his thumb across his knuckles. Stede stops fiddling with his ring and looks up at him, wide-eyed. "This isn't Captain shit. This is God shit. Are you God?"
The room is blank with silence.
Gently, Ed repeats, "Are you God, Stede?"
Stede's voice is thin and high when he answers, "I'm not God."
"And is God here, in this room?"
Comically, Stede looks around like he might find God perched on the edge of his desk, or pulling books from his shelves to examine the spines.
"He's not," Stede concedes.
"That's right, mate. Stupid bugger doesn't associate himself with pirates."
Or: The Revenge has been becalmed for six days. Ed has bigger things to worry about, like sharks and being in love.
