As Kei watched on the screen, Yamaguchi’s expression started to change. His smile faded, his eyebrows furrowing in an expression Kei always called his thinking-so-hard-he-might-pull-something face. What could he possibly be thinking too hard about right now? It wasn’t like he had to work at coaxing his muscles into the easy smile that usually came naturally to him.
“... One…”
Yamaguchi shifted in Kei’s lap, turning his face away from the camera and toward Kei’s. Just before the shutter clicked for the last time, Kei felt the press of lips against his cheek. He watched it happen on the screen half a second later, which felt a lot like watching it happen to someone else entirely. Everything happened so fast, like his brain was moving in slow motion. Eventually, Kei understood.

Summary
“Wow,” Tendou says, eyes going wide. “How do you do that, Wakatoshi?” he asks, motioning vaguely all over the paper.
Wakatoshi shrugs. His drawing is nothing special; no matter how much he perfected his lines, he just can’t do justice to Tendou. He can give back his facial features, sure, but the boy on the paper doesn’t have what it takes to be Tendou -- the energy, the liveliness, the freedom -- he seems like a caged bird in comparison, sitting kind of rigidly in his chair and with only a speck of light reflecting his eyes.
The real Tendou sitting in front of him is shining.In which Ushijima and Tendou boops each other's nose.

Auntie mulls it over. "Those sound like things you do."
Tooru's face flushes. "Well—well, yeah, he's my best friend."
She cocks her head at him, eyebrows raised. "So you want him to get another best friend?"
The visceral rejection of the idea fills him so fast, he's spitting out, "Never," before he even realizes it. Hajime's his best friend. His.
When he sees the amusement on Auntie's face, his flush deepens. "I—I mean," he fumbles, then straightens and crosses his arms, chin tilted up. "I'm irreplaceable, of course. I just mean this girl shouldn't hold him back."
Auntie nods, letting out a drawn out, "Ah." She grabs a potato and halves it. "I see. And you're sure it's a girl?"
"Of course, who else—" Tooru freezes. Wait.

After the camera crew and interviewer bids them goodbye, Satori takes them back to his apartment.
“Why do you feel bad?” Wakatoshi’s hand settles against Satori’s thigh. Jesus. Fucking. Christ. “You have many friends, Satori. To you, our friendship is likely not as important. To me, you were the first person who wanted to know me, save for, perhaps, Sakusa. You made me feel …” He seems to struggle with his words for a moment, before he dips his head a little. Satori marvels at the clear sign of embarrassment. “You made me feel less weird. I never had many friends, and I still don’t. You were my first best friend.”
Suffice to say, Satori is speechless.

“ — Exciting? Glamorous?” the redhead prompts, obviously proud of his globetrotting accomplishment.

The man falters for the first time, like he finds Ushijima’s answer odd — despite being even odder himself — and laughs, infectious and hearty, like Ushijima has made some sort of joke.
One fateful day, a colorful, painfully extroverted young man named Tendou Satori moves into the unit above Ushijima's apartment. He's odd, presumptuous, and — most egregious of all — he's shockingly noisy. And the quiet, scheduled routine Ushijima Wakatoshi lives is forever altered.

Of course if there was one thing that could be counted on, it was Ushijima’s blunt, total honesty. “Do you think Tendou is attracted to me?”
Reon froze. “T-Tendou?”
“Yes.”
Tendou was notoriously hard to read, but Reon kind of figured that he wasn’t the type to be anything less than painfully overt with romantic affections.
“I... I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I think if Tendou was attracted to you, he would let you know,” Reon said. “I'd guess he just considers you his best friend.” He hoped his answer would satisfy whatever frenzy the guy had worked himself into so Reon could finally take advantage of his last precious hours of sleep.
But instead, Ushijima visibly deflated in front of him. “Yes. That’s what I thought too,” he said miserably.
