Summary
“Buck…” she starts. Then she looks at the dish towel still in her hand, folds it twice in half and carefully lays it on the kitchen island. It’s how she always moves. Not like he’s a wild animal she doesn’t want to scare off, but as if he came in a box labeled Handle With Care.
For a while he’d convinced himself he’d grown enough to stop inspiring that particular instinct in her. And if it were anyone else, Buck would probably be offended. He isn’t fragile.
Except Maddie doesn’t need him to prove anything, she just cares because that’s the kind of person she is. Good-hearted and compassionate.
It makes it a little bit easier to accept that he’s probably always going to need her in some way or another.
Sometimes he just wishes she wouldn’t always sniff out all the things he doesn’t want to talk about like a bloodhound. It’s much more admirable when she does it to Jee and Chim, as far as he’s concerned.
He clears his suddenly dry throat and waits for her to continue.
“You know I can hear you on the baby monitor, right?”
Or: Maddie gives Buck a much needed push to start talking to people again. Preferably people who aren’t her baby. He starts with Eddie.

He tries to call Nora again but it goes to voicemail. With a sigh, Alex throws the phone on the bed and makes his way over to the kitchen. Like a guest of the royal family has ever cooked.
Tap, tap, tap goes his foot against the wooden floor. The cold seeps in even through his socks and if that isn’t a metaphor for this whole godforsaken palace, Alex doesn’t know what is.
He needs a walk. Get this energy out.

Summary
Before Eddie can think of any more excuses, Buck bursts back through the surface of the water with Eddie’s body in his arms.
Eddie looks down at himself, still kneeling on the dock, and then at what is unmistakably also him in the water. Buck sucks in a great gasp of air, but the Eddie in the water doesn’t. His head slumps limp onto Buck’s shoulder, and the puzzle pieces of the last few minutes suddenly fall into place.
Finding himself back on the dock with no memory of how he got there. Buck unable to see or hear him. Eddie’s hand passing right through him.
Oh. He didn’t make it out of the water. He drowned.

He looks good, like he’s living a happy life, and the only possible reason Chris can imagine for Buck to be here at Helena Diaz’s funeral in El Paso is that Chris’s father brought him.
“Why would you come?” Chris snaps at him.
Buck blinks. “Why wouldn’t I come?”
“She didn’t mean anything to you.”
“I’m not here for her,” Buck scoffs. “She is dead. I’m here for him.”

Summary
Eddie forgets how to speak.
Because there it is—undeniable, impossible to miss. The outline, boldly printed against the soft gray of Buck’s sweatpants. He immediately looks up at something else, anything else, eyes scrambling for purchase on something in the room.
Did Buck… know? No one wore pants like that without at least some awareness of the situation going on south of the waistband. He had to know. There was no way he didn’t. But he looked so casual about it. Oblivious.
Should Eddie tell him? What would he even say? Does he just cough pointedly and hope Buck gets the hint? There isn’t a protocol for accidentally looking at your best friend’s dick.
He sneaks another downward glance. Quick.
