I’m just out here to snap myself out of it, Martin reminded himself sternly. It was just a stupid nightmare, I’m fine, I just need a minute. And then he’d go back to bed. Crawl back between the covers (slowly, quietly, so he didn’t wake Jon), fall back asleep, and wake up in the morning feeling just fine. Or saying he felt just fine, anyway.

Martin sat, legs curled under himself and wrapped in a blanket, on the somewhat lumpy couch in the safehouse living room, listening to an old radio wrap songs he was vaguely familiar with in a soft shroud of static. The mug of tea between his hands was a comfort, and as he raised it to his lips, he knew that it wasn’t going to help. None of it helped.

The woman’s fingers curl around the blaster in his hand. Perhaps it is an amount of trust he cannot explain, or a faith he did not know he was still capable of, or simply his body giving up on him—but Jet’s grip loosens.
The gun does not have a stun setting. She removes the laser cart instead, then holsters it. Her eyes stay on him, wary, but something in her face has softened. Into the sudden silence she speaks the words that he will remember for the rest of his life.

I've recently been unexpectedly promoted to lead a department in my organisation, wrote the anonymous emailer.
As there was no one working here when I arrived, my manager, who is head of the organisation, had promised me the choice of my own assistants. However, without warning, he simply presented me with an additional assistant. This new assistant’s first act on his first day was to let a dog into the office. It took several hours to catch and clean up after this dog and it has only been downhill from there. I admit I'm not entirely sure what to do with this assistant now I'm stuck with him. I'm hoping you have some advice?

It can be anything, but if it's something the other person can grant, like, say, 'I want to keep holding your hand'--" Dainix squeezed Falst's again--"they can say yes or no based on if they want it too. So you can say 'sure', or if you don't feel like it, you can say 'no' or 'not right now'. And if you say 'sure', I'll keep holding it, and if you say 'no', I'll let go."
Falst stared down at their intertwined fingers. "Um. Sure."
Or: on a sleepless night in the soulshapers' monastery, Dainix has an idea to help him and Falst communicate more. Falst decides to play along and see where it leads.
