Torn sweater. Crimson scratches across her shoulder. Dirt smeared on her cheek where she'd taken a hard fall.

Zelda is among them, and while everyone still calls her Princess, she’s not sure she wants to lay claim to an old throne. What she really wants is to move on. She wants to continue her research, to prove her worth beyond her bloodline, and to spend as much time with Link as she can…which sounds an awful lot like what she wanted a hundred years ago…

Summary
Link stumbled upon the Master Sword when he was only twelve years old. Zelda has heard the stories, some in passing from other knights gossipping in the castle halls, others from Impa and her father. Most of them are just fairytales—no one actually knows exactly how Link found it, partly because he’s never told anyone. All they know for certain is that he’d gone off exploring one day, back when the greatest dangers were just bears and Deku hornets, and wandered into the barracks that evening to show his father the muddy, vine-covered sword he’d managed to drag back with him.
Everything changed that night. Sometimes Zelda thinks that her childhood ended the day her mother died. Other times she thinks it ended for a second time, along with Link’s, the day he found that cursed sword.

Impa is given a secret assignment from the King just before she is to escort Zelda and Link back to Kakariko Village for the festival of Sahasra’s Pass: make sure their arrangement is not creating “unnecessary distractions.” It seems silly for the King to be so concerned about such an implausible matter. Anyone with two eyes can see they clearly despise each other.
Impa forgets she has three.
