Summary
Vash’s days are numbered. Wolfwood leads him closer to his fate each and every day. He’s prepared himself for the inevitable, kept his thoughts and feelings carefully stored out of reach. But when they arrive at the extraction point—shoes full of sand and Vash hardly able to hold up his own weight—things don’t go how he expected.
They don’t go that way at all.
Or, Wolfwood unknowingly helps unite the twins during their heat, then gets caught in the undertow.

They’re always with him, his sacrifices. Ever since the early days when the planet was nothing but sandstorm and shipwreck. They bend and fold in Nai’s mind, blossom and abscise, murmur as they watch over him. And he basks in it — that nurturing aura, their tender caresses and dreams shared lovingly with him and no other. It fuels him.
But sometimes they get too loud. Sometimes they drown out all else.
Sometimes he doesn’t know what’s real anymore.

Summary
The bed is trembling ever so slightly.
It pulls Wolfwood from his slumber — until he’s floating just at the surface of consciousness. Sometimes Vash fights with the blankets, Wolfwood has never really been sure how he manages to get so tangled up in them. Mostly, he just stays out of his way once they part and begin drifting off, not wanting to catch a stray fist.
This isn’t that, though.

Legally speaking, he wasn't trespassing. His name was on the lease. The rent was paid automatically from his checking account each month. He'd once held the original keys, and he’d placed them in Vash's palm without hesitation. There was only the thorny issue that Vash had never given him a key back, never intended to, and had, without ever saying so explicitly, forbidden him from visiting. In the two years and counting Vash had lived here, Nai hadn't set foot past the threshold once he'd helped him move in. And he'd never asked to. Easier to live with the denial, when he could pretend Vash wouldn't say no.
Nai's brother has always set firm boundaries for them both, even when they aren't in his best interest. Can you blame a man for working around them?

There’s screaming, whimpering. Someone choking on a breath before gagging. It’s him, it’s him. Oh god does it hurt, it hurts –
“It’s alright,” Vash shouts over the noise. “It’s alright, hold on. I think you’re just… You’re just…” He doesn’t have to say it for the both of them to know. The change in light must have sent Nai into heat. They’ve only seen it induced in plants, never on independents.
The thought that it’s happening to him enrages him only long enough until the urge to push overcomes it.

Nai makes a small, humiliating noise as Legato licks across his instep. He jerks back, and for a moment Legato doesn’t let him go, fingers caged around his ankle bone and the vulnerable tendon there. Then Legato releases him, and Nai curls his legs into the air, staring down at him with wide eyes.
Neither of them expects the laugh that bubbles out of Nai. Slowly, he reaches his foot out once more, smearing blood across Legato’s lips and chin. “Lick,” he says, and Legato does.
