Summary
The ballroom that the masquerade is being held in is beautiful, all crystal chandeliers and sparkling decorations, champagne and tiny appetizers, meaningless polite conversation and networking. Aventurine thinks that in another life, he might have liked events like these. Might have felt more at home in the suit that rubs uncomfortably against his wrists, might have been a little better at laughing at some executive’s terrible joke, might have been able to stomach the food a little more. Or maybe he would have just been better at pretending he fit in with this life. Even in another world, Aventurine would still be the same Avgin orphan; maybe his suits would have always hung a little loose, no matter how good he got at pretending he was comfortable in them.

Distantly, he thinks about Robin. She had always been the more social of the two of them, even when neither of them really had friends growing up. Robin was the one invited to sleepovers and movie nights and the like—Sunday was the one who stayed up late into the night just to read over the missive the Family had given him. But Robin was also the one who stayed up late with him and told him about the movie she’d just seen and how she’d like to watch it with him at some point.
Sunday had appreciated the gesture, but he’d never quite understood how she couldn’t tell how busy he was with everything, and had assumed that when she stopped asking she’d simply figured out that he didn’t have the time and was being respectful of that.
(Sunday knows now that there was simply no point in her asking a question she already knew the answer to. He had not convinced her that he didn’t have the time—he had simply crushed the hope that he would make some for her.)

There is an inexplicable draw to Veritas Ratio, even as little as Aventurine actually knows about him, something beyond whatever surface level attraction there was to begin with. It’s not so ridiculous—Veritas is attractive, seems to be interested in Aventurine, and inexplicably was able to drop everything to run his mothers’ florist business for three months. That kind of person is fascinating, objectively, and unique things have always caught Aventurine’s attention.
He can’t remember the last time he looked at someone and thought, I think I want to date you, but that’s enough of an anomaly to make Veritas someone worth learning more about.

There is a dragon in a nearby cave who is said to hoard knowledge instead of jewels, to thrive on the thrill of learning rather than that of the hunt, to believe that humans—at their core—are more than just food to be eaten. The village by that cave reveres this dragon, even though they’ve never seen them. Isn’t that even more of a reason to worship them? For the fact that they seem to be so completely disinterested in their people?
