Summary
Luke's not expecting it when his Timer goes off. He's expecting it to go off that day but not at that time. Not surrounded by his students.
Calum, however, is expecting his Timer to go off in class. He's a college freshman. Everyone's Timers go off during their first few weeks of freshman year. It's normal. Almost boring. Usual.

Summary
Calum’s heart sinks a little bit, and he's not entirely sure why. Maybe it's because he's allowed himself to fall victim to Michael's seduction yet again, or maybe it's because he's disappointed in himself for being so willing to try something that could so easily be dangerous. Or maybe, the most likely of all, it's because he can hear Mali's voice in his head telling him how stupid he's been to have found himself—quite literally—backed against the wall like this, with a boy he barely knows whispering dirty promises into his ear when he doesn't even know the first thing about real relationships.
Or, Calum spends a night with the boy that smells like smoke, and as it always is with bad addictions, he keeps getting sucked right back in.

They knew about his panic attacks, they were aware that he hadn't been doing too well recently. No one really knew what was going on with Luke, not really. Not even his best friends or his family. He kept it to himself, hiding the truth deep inside - he wasn't excepting that anyone would ever figure out what he was struggling with. He never really wanted anyone to know, but this new kid, this Ashton really did start to wonder if he'd ever seen him eat, and why Luke always wore hoodies even when it was hot out there. Maybe he wasn't the only one with secrets?

Summary
Luke knew who Ashton was. He knew of how pivotal Ashton was to the war, knew of the power that thrummed through the boy's veins. (Ashton could crush him with just a thought. Wasn't that scary?)
