He reads it on a Tuesday in October, because Rebekah is bored and restless and has taken to pulling books off his shelves and leaving them open on various surfaces like a cat knocking things off tables. The book falls open to the wrong page, and Klaus reads it, and the bottom drops out of his world in a quiet and catastrophic way.
The entry is about the Blood Mark.
The entry describes, in meticulous Old French, exactly what an Original vampire creates when he feeds another vampire exclusively with his own blood across three consecutive moon cycles.
Klaus has been feeding Damon his blood, in various creative and well-intentioned ways, for the better part of a year.
(Or: Klaus accidentally bonded Damon to himself out of sheer love and protectiveness, and now he has to explain that. This is going to go great.)
