After a moment of pondering, tapping his quill against the edge of his desk, he finally sighed, “It doesn’t matter; let them in.”

"What's a merboy?" He asked, grey eyes wide. You couldn't tell if they were sparkling from excitement or disbelief.
"Like a mermaid, but just a boy," you explained. "He looked my age. And he had all these shells, but dropped them when he went back in the water." You opened your fist to show him all of the seashells tucked inside. Then you showed him the green piece of sea glass. "His hair was this exact color."
"How could someone's hair be green?" He questioned, one eyebrow higher than the other.
"Merpeople hair can be all kinds of colors," you said matter-of-factly.

Jamie Last has grown up living next to the ocean their whole life. Their mother Noelani, a surfer. A hobby, going down to the beach on occasion to look for treasures that have washed ashore, sifting through the dry sand or cautiously wading into the water up to their knees in their hunts.
Their biggest shame? They are incapable of allowing themself to swim anywhere other than in a chlorinated pool.
