Summary
They fly to the ground, Sonic landing right on top of the alpha. He scrambles to get off of Shadow as the dark hedgehog groans. “What the hell…?” He turns over and his face scrunches in anger when he sees Sonic. “Sonic!” He grabs Sonic by the bandana and yanks him close to his face to get a look at him. Sonic yelps and tugs at Shadow’s wrist, trying to get his bandana back against his gland, but—it’s too late.
Shadow’s brows shift from knitted in anger to knitted in confusion. He breathes deeply, scenting the air. His eyes widened as he looked Sonic up and down. “Woah… You really are a faker.”

“I used to wonder… what if things were different. What if the raid hadn’t happened, what if Maria hadn’t died, what if I’d been able to save her. But… if those things didn’t happen, I wouldn’t be who I am now. And I know that it’s stupid, given everything I am, that I’ve done, but I don’t want to change this. I’m okay with who I am.”
The therapist told him that was wonderful. Then she reminded him, patiently, that it wasn’t wrong to accept himself, and the conversation drifted to self-esteem, leaving the second half of Shadow’s thought unsaid.
I just wish Maria got the same chance.
