    Summary

“In a sense, there is no such thing as healing. From paper cuts to surgical scars, our bodies are catalogues of wounds; imperfectly locked doors quietly waiting, sooner or later, to spring back open.” ~ Infinite Exchange by Geoff Manaugh.

Sam didn’t expect to face his past this way—one old scar surfacing after the other across his body—and the one person who might be able to break the curse is the one person who should want Sam dead.

“Let me get this straight,” Dean says, and takes another sip from his cup. He needs way more coffee if he’s expected to deal with this so early in the morning.

“You – magicked up a chicken.”

“Look, I don’t know either, man.” Sam throws up his hands, helplessly. “It’s just – I haven’t been sleeping and I’ve been trying to get some more practice, and … I don’t know, conjuring up poultry seemed safer than experimenting with dark blood magic at four in the morning, you know?”

“Well, can’t argue with you there,” Dean concedes, and tilts his head to contemplate the chicken. The chicken stares back, unfazed.

    Summary

But that’s when he notices them: the rings.

The shining knickknacks on the table to Sam’s left aren’t just pieces of bargain-bin estate fluff. It’s jewelry. Now that Dean’s moved away, a shaft of light falls right onto the table, reflecting light directly into Sam’s vision.  He blinks away the bright spots, and there they are. Sitting innocuously on the edge of the table closest to him.

Later, it will feel like fate. Right now, the feeling is inexplicable, as Sam’s burgeoning sentence dies on his tongue.

Or: After Chuck has been defeated and life is as good as it's ever been, Sam impulsively buys a pair of rings at an estate sale. Dean starts acting strangely.

    Summary

Sam’s first two years at Stanford are pretty ordinary, if you disregard the part where he misses his brother so much that he keeps one of Dean’s old T-shirts under his pillow. At the beginning of junior year, though, Dean stops by unexpectedly after a hunt, then just…keeps dropping by, for one reason or another.

Now Sam’s got to deal with hiding his feelings for his (mercifully) oblivious brother, all his friends think Dean’s his boyfriend, he’s overdue on a paper and hasn't started studying for finals, there may or may not be a poltergeist in the basement rec room, and, oh yeah, Dean found that damn T-shirt he’s had under his pillow for close on three years now.

And he’d thought college life would be simple.

"What if Dad died when you were at school?” Dean asks, suddenly.

Sam blinks. Easy answer. “I'd come and get you.” He almost adds, and take you to my place , so Dean really, really gets it, but he refrains.
