But that’s when he notices them: the rings.
The shining knickknacks on the table to Sam’s left aren’t just pieces of bargain-bin estate fluff. It’s jewelry. Now that Dean’s moved away, a shaft of light falls right onto the table, reflecting light directly into Sam’s vision. He blinks away the bright spots, and there they are. Sitting innocuously on the edge of the table closest to him.
Later, it will feel like fate. Right now, the feeling is inexplicable, as Sam’s burgeoning sentence dies on his tongue.
Or: After Chuck has been defeated and life is as good as it's ever been, Sam impulsively buys a pair of rings at an estate sale. Dean starts acting strangely.

Summary
Sam’s first two years at Stanford are pretty ordinary, if you disregard the part where he misses his brother so much that he keeps one of Dean’s old T-shirts under his pillow. At the beginning of junior year, though, Dean stops by unexpectedly after a hunt, then just…keeps dropping by, for one reason or another.
Now Sam’s got to deal with hiding his feelings for his (mercifully) oblivious brother, all his friends think Dean’s his boyfriend, he’s overdue on a paper and hasn't started studying for finals, there may or may not be a poltergeist in the basement rec room, and, oh yeah, Dean found that damn T-shirt he’s had under his pillow for close on three years now.
And he’d thought college life would be simple.

Summary
It was supposed to be a simple case; to take their minds off Lucifer and to take a break from worrying about mom and Jack in the Apocalypse World. Sirens, despite their mind games, were pretty predictable once you got past the whole honey trap angle they had going.
Of course, once they got there, things turned to be bit more complicated than a siren and suddenly, there are actual secrets on the line.
Now, Sam wants to know who Dean is in love with and Dean just hopes Sam never figures out that it's him.

With a little help, Dean learns what Sam had been unable to share -- just how far he was willing to go do and what he is still going through, proving to Dean that he is still Sam’s stone number one.

Post-Season 3 AU: Sam continues to use the dream root after they finish the dreamwalking hunt in order to make his ability to control dreams stronger. He tells himself it's just to hone a skill he can use while hunting. As Dean's deal gets closer to coming due and Sam's nightmares become more and more vivid, however, it becomes an escape—until Sam walks into Dean's dream and everything changes. What started as a way to avoid bad dreams becomes a new connection between Sam and Dean, one so strong that even the distance between Earth and Hell can't keep them apart.
