And so, this year, on a bright and cold January second, wrapped up in bed with a hangover and a pit in his stomach, Nick had resolved to do the one thing that he’d been tiptoeing around for the past four years: tell Charlie Spring he loves him.
At every turn so far, Nick has chickened out.
Now though, with two and a half hours until the new year arrives, he has no choice but to be brave.

Prompt: Sarah always used to tell Nick that new year's resolutions were magical and to use them only for things he really really cares about. At the start of the year, Nick made a New Year's Resolution to tell his best friend Charlie that he's in love with him but has kept chickening out. Now, it's Dec 31st and he's desperately trying to tell him before midnight because he's convinced if he doesn't then it's bad luck. It's a NYE party, and they keep getting interrupted by friends etc.

“You awake?” Nick asks, dropping his phone on his chest and carding his fingers through Charlie’s sleep-mussed curls instead. “Good morning, birthday boy.”
“Tomorrow,” Charlie grumbles, turning his face into Nick’s armpit. Nick laughs, squeezes him impossibly closer.
“All weekend, baby,” he says. Charlie’s skin is so lovely and warm against his own. Nick would stay here all day if they didn’t have friends on their way. “Can I see your pretty face, sweet boy? Missed you while we slept.”

Summary
Charlie doesn’t have a thing for French guys. He doesn’t think. It’s just that he tends to fall for the same type of person.
The first time happens when he’s still a kid. His teacher sets up a penpal exchange with a French school, and Charlie gets paired up with a wonderful boy called Nick. Charlie ends up falling in love with him even though they've never met.
The second time happens years later, after Nick and Charlie have lost contact. Charlie is in uni and he desperately needs a French tutor to help him pass. A charming half-French boy called Nick volunteers, and Charlie falls in love again.
Maybe Charlie does have a thing for French guys. Half-French guys called ‘Nick,’ to be specific.

Summary
Charlie reads about it obsessively when Nick isn’t here, because of course he does. He’s always been driven to understand things; understanding begets control begets safety. He can’t really find any convincing organic explanation, though, despite his efforts. He’s flirted with time dilation, and dualistic philosophy, and astral projection, and even the concept of entangled quantum states, with its qubits and vector space. None of it sticks though; in truth, the very fact of Nick, now, in his bed, is the most convincing evidence for the existence of a soul that Charlie has ever found.
In which Nick dreams, and Charlie waits.
