Summary
Meng Yao once imagined that the rest of his life would go something like this. Nie Mingjue would find another man he loved more and break up with Meng Yao. It’d be amicable. Meng Yao would end up on his best friend’s doorstep and finally confess the feelings he’s kept close to his chest for years. Lan Xichen would listen with that kind expression he’s always offered Meng Yao, and then he would open his door to let him in, and Meng Yao would never have to leave again.
In the end, it wasn’t Meng Yao’s fault. Nie Mingjue thinks he fell out of love, but he was wrong. Loving Nie Mingjue was work, but Meng Yao has always enjoyed putting himself to good use. A love built up brick-by-brick did not fall so easily.
What Meng Yao has come to realize is that love and resentment are not opposites. They are unfortunate neighbors, sharing the wall of a building neither want to keep inhabiting.

Technically Huaisang never slept with Wen Chao, just...spent a few minutes extricating himself from what turned out to be that awful murder-tortoise cave adventure. And anyway, it doesn’t matter because Wen Chao wasn’t on The List. The List was the problem. Is the problem.
Remember that Top Cultivator’s list? You know the one, the one where the Twin Jades were the two most eligible cultivators and Wei Wuxian was ranked higher than Jiang Cheng?
Yeah, that was Huaisang’s fault. But no one regrets it more than he does.
Except maybe all the dead people.
