He couldn't have been much older than me, perhaps thirteen. I had heard of a young knight, the youngest ever to be appointed, among the castle gossip, but I hadn't paid it much attention. It seemed that he had been placed on door duty during our banquets.'

'I do not need to know how many shades of blue can be found in the irises of the Hero's eyes or that in a certain light they can match the Master Sword's hilt (a dubious assertion). Nor do I need to be made aware of how many individual sweat droplets he excretes while partaking in his early morning training exercises, which he apparently practises while half-nude. I have also yet to find myself interested in how long it takes for him to notice his hair tie is missing or that his hair is longer than it appears and smells of tea tree shampoo.'
Or, Zelda discovers that clouded eyes will never see the truth.

“I will.” Romeo didn’t know what he was saying, he only knew that that quiet sadness didn’t belong on Carlo’s face. “As often as you want. Whenever you need me.”

Summary
Romeo and Carlo sneak out of the charity house for the night.
“I’ll tell you what I want,” Carlo continues, parting the window curtains to let moonlight spill into the room. The window unlatches with a creak before a rush of icy air makes Romeo’s skin prickle. “I want to live.”
“You want to go out? Even after I sneaked all the way up here for you?” Romeo asks, the words falling from his lips before he can stop them. Because these are the magic words: for you. For Carlo. His best friend knows he has all the cards. He always has.
Carlo grins.

Summary
Carlo Gepetto may have inherited a tinker’s steady hands, but he certainly isn’t methodical with them. He’s not like Romeo, who’s learned that reckless emotion is a luxury that he can rarely afford. Carlo is a person who keeps wanting, no matter how much it keeps hurting him. Each rejection just leads to another want. He hasn’t grown out of that aching, hungry need.
The thing is, Romeo is perfectly aware that Carlo’s method of coping with his father’s constant slights probably isn’t the best one. The other thing is, he absolutely is not going to say that.

Summary
With all the capacity for self-righteous anger his station allows him, it’s not unusual for Carlo to come back to their shared room with a new bruise or sprain from sparring a bit too hard. What is unusual, however, is how cagey he’s being about the brand new black eye he’s sporting.
“It was just an accident,” Carlo huffs, “now leave it be.”
Romeo finds out how Carlo likes to blow off steam and offers himself as an alternative. After all, he'd do anything if it meant keeping Carlo safe.
