Steve murmurs something in his sleep. Jonathan’s name, maybe. Maybe not.
Jonathan sits on the edge of the couch and listens to Steve breathe until the tightness in his chest eases just a fraction.
He doesn’t question any of it.

Summary
The mare is but a silhouette of a human and yet at his words something passes through her expression - whether it’s surprise, joy, fear, Geralt doesn’t know. But it’s clear that what he said has struck her in some way.
(“She is not some mindless monster, Geralt.” He remembers Jaskier’s words.)
A mare, also known as a mara or a zmora - a malicious entity, a bringer of nightmares and a demon of the night. An easy enough contract to fulfill, if only frustrating, or at least that’s what Geralt believes when he first sets out to hunt down one such mare.
What he doesn’t expect is to be wrapped up in a tale of a wronged soul, of love and of joy.

Jaskier stands at the river in just his underclothes, rinsing his trousers in the water. He’s shivering in the cold evening air. Geralt stands and approaches him. The bard doesn’t look like he’s hurt, he can’t see the blood, just smell it. It clings to Jaskier, beckons Geralt to take a look, to save what’s left to save. But the troubadour seems fine, his face distorted in discomfort which can stem from standing in the waters of a spring river for two long.

Geralt never seemed to pay too much attention to Jaskier’s appearance - that he was glad of. It meant he never noticed the thin, metal, chaos-coated necklace that hung around his neck under his chemise, the dandelion engraved on it holding a secret that, in their day and age, no one was allowed to know.
In summary: Jaskier uses magic to hide he's trans, but truly, Geralt was goign to find out eventually.

Hey! So this is what I would consider an ancient fic. I first posted in 2020 ( which was 6 years ago at time of editing) and it has been on a journey since then.
The first few chapters are fun and a great try and I look somewhat fondly back at that time of my life (even though it was actually horrific.)
The middle section was a very wishy-washy sense of time for me, and I feel the writing reflects that.
The final chapter is one long piece that I hope showcases how I’ve improved over the half decade I’ve been coming back to this story.I began writing this for fun, and I hope the fic reflects that.
