His hands curl into fists to keep himself from jumping in. "Mother Sunyoung doesn't want me in the river," he says.
"That's because she's afraid of what you are."
"And you know what I am?"
A slow smile unwinds across his face. "Yes."
(Or: Jeongguk's guardian has rules—never cry, never run, never stand in the rain, and most of all, never go into the river. But when he stumbles upon Taehyung, a mermaid suffocating on the side of the riverbank, the rules no longer apply.)

The ferret let out a distressed squeak.
"HOBI?"
Oh, my god. I've turned my crush into a ferret!
