“You ran? You gotta be kidding me,” Nathan breathes as he shoots him an incredulous look from the kitchen, where he’s pulling a bottle of water from the fridge.
“I was panicking!”
A concerned look replaces the other on Nate’s face. “Still are, I think,” the boy says softly, returning to palm the bottle into his hand and usher him towards the couch. He waits until they’re sitting before speaking again. “What could possibly have happened to make you—”
“We slept together,” Nick interrupts, the words tumbling free without him meaning for them to. He shakes out a breath, chest squeezing as he adds croakily, “Us. The three of us.”
Nathan freezes on the spot.

They fall back onto the blanket, side by side now, shoulders barely touching. The grass rustles gently around them, stirred by the breeze. The sun hangs lazily overhead, casting long yellow streaks across the field. Matt lets his head tilt toward Nick, not quite looking at him, just soaking in his nearness.
Nick lets his fingers trail along Matt’s wrist, twitching like they wanted to hold more. “You ever think about us?”
Matt’s eyes don’t leave the water-colored sky, but something in his chest shifts, almost bracing. “What do you mean?”
